Triangular Tang Punch

Hi chaps,

I need to punch small triangular shaped tangs into some mid steel and was therefore looking for an appropriate punch. The tang grabs the final of the seat cover and effectively create a sharp little triangle that the vinyl loops over (the tang pops through the vinyl).

Anyone know of a tool I could use for this?

I read your other thread, and see that you need to attach the covering for your motor bike seat, I did a couple a long time ago and attached the cover using hot melt glue instead of the tangs that you mention,

Might be worth doing this anyway as even with the tang punch the vinyl has a habit of ripping with age.

Would still be interested if there is a tool to do this though.

Id form one from some piece of hardenable steel (rebar?), then punxh them with a fly press.
If you shape it to your triangular shape with a slight taper, then file the tip to an acute chamfer (so one of the points is sharpish) then it should form the "tang".
Ideally, youd want a triangular socket to punch into, but the end of a piece of soft pine, or lead, or hard rubber, or damp sand works.

Most British bikes used a spring clip such as these - http://www.woolies-trim.co.uk/p-1481-spring-clip.aspx

They clip over the rim of the base. Normally they're then covered by a push on trim.

I'm a car upholsterer, its not superglue or hot glue you need for this.Contact adhesive is the right stuff.

Avoid aerosol contact adhesive for sticking a seat cover down, we use a thin glue through a cheap gravity feed spray gun.
