For aluminium you need pure argon, which isn't what you need for steel.

Argon + 2.5% CO2 is good for stainless and you can use it for relatively thin mild steel, up to 3mm, the danger with thicker mild steel is due to the low CO2 content you can suffer from lack of fusion. It depends what the majority of your welding is and what you want the end result to be be.
If your mainly going to be welding mild steel with just the odd bit of stainless that you want to stick together and your not overly bothered about the condition of the stainless welds I would go with a three component mix like Argoshield Light, at the end of the day you will have to accept it is going to be a bit of a compromise though

Thanks backpurge - the stainless is all on exhaust pipe (1.5mm wall 304). The mild jobs left to do are on chassis bits between 2 and 4mm onto similar...
Thanks mr shiney thats what i was hoping to hear. I want to do aluminium too as i have a sump to close up after surgery and various other alloy bits to modify so I've got to get another cylinder for that but at least i can manage with one for stainless and carbon steel. I actually think the one thats coming to the end is that mix anyway (but from a competitor) as i asked for a mix for steel body panels at the time.
Ok then, i shall order just 10L argon for the aluminium and use up the last of the cylinder i have practising on stainless and get it refilled with the same when its gone. apart from Aluminium and Stainless wires, another regulator and a restock of consumables, is there anything else I could do with getting down the shop? I tend to gas weld or braze aluminium although I can TIG if I wanted to. I keep a little 5l diving cylinder with pure argon in it with a convertor if I do need to TIG.
If you are on a wish list of things to buy for a shop the. How big is your wallet!! I bought an Eastwood Plasma Cutter and that is one of my most used toys, especially when dealing with exhausts! It's been great value for money despite a Ricky start with the first one failing out the box. I got it from Frosts but don't bother going to them for spares as they are useless, I can never get them to call me back to sell parts. I get the spares from plasma tech.
Otherwise, just buy stuff as you find you need it. The collection grows organically then!!
