Tree Stumps - Whats to do

One of my relatives had a general contracting business and did a lot of tree work and demolition. He used to use gelignite to blow routes out if he could. Used to get into all sorts of trouble with flying clods of earth. Would also winch them out with his AEC Matador or get them with the 4 in 1 on the Drott. He's been known to drag rootes down the road where the AEC wouldn't lift them. Stump grinders are brilliant. Enjoyed watching some cowboys remove a stump in the next door neighbours garden and then demolish their newly erected gate when the grinder was being driven out.

Just catching up on all the replies, thank you for the informative post with a fair sprinkling of humour

Just to answer a few of the questions in no particular order

The garage in question is one I purchased back in November 2019 and it is sat on its own plot so no worries about making a mess, it already is a mess so can't get much worse.

The trees were cut down prior to my ownership so no idea what they are. They were sprouting new growth so I drilled a series of holes around the base and packed them with Ammonium Sulphamate and it seems to have done the job.

The stmps are about 8" to maybe 12" across and I have probably about 18" above the ground still there.

I am going to hire a mini digger anyway to excavate the ground so will see how that goes and try and get as much of the stumps out as possible but failing that will get a stump grinder in to reduce them..

The garage is slightly downhill from the lane that runs in front of it so gets very wet with all the water run off as it is so don't think I will have any problems with it drying out too much. I am planning on adding some perforated drainage pipes to take some it it to the rear where the ground is lower still.

When they cut the trees down they left them in front of the garage along with several years worth of brambles and weeds, this was me starting to clear the site, tree stumps are in between the door and yes there is some subsidance

what about dig them out lay as you would for putting block paving tarmac down laying the type 1 and leave it for a 2 years or so kill any weeds that come up top up the type 1 and lay the tarmac

On the subject of stumps, my lads dismantled this monster of an Oak today (4mts diameter at the base) , thought we were in for a big grind and found the thing was completely rotten.

Its surprising what can be achieved with a mattock, tripod/block&tackle or a tirfor and strop. If you have time there is a few quid to be saved in just grunting them out.

The runaway stump grinder was being used by a well known Brentwood tree company that has a high incidence of its operatives being high and not just when they're up a tree.

Top job. You deserve a medal for pulling out a monster like that. I had a similar problem with a compacted, shared root ball which had half a dozen mature sycamore trees sprouting from it. I had the additional complication the entire forest of ten metre plus trunks were leaning over the boundary at 45 degrees pointing at my neighbour.

Getting the entire root ball out was a mammoth task but intensely satisfying (eventually).
