Treadle Gilly, Conversion to Power

I have lost nearly 4 stone in weight (intentional) and just recently been in hospital with what turned out to be pneumonia. I've been told to expect rib and back pain for weeks, if not months.

I own a 4ft Keetona treadle guillotine and wondered how easy in would be to mechanise it.
This could make my work a bit more bearable. I'm self employed so not working isn't an option.


Anyone done it, or have any thoughts on the matter ?

I'm looking for one at the moment and was thinking just the other day about how to automate it.

I'd of thought that a couple of large bore long stroke pneumatic cylinders would easily replace leg power.
Maybe run them through two push switches (running solenoids) mounted each side of the machine so it can only be operated with two hands.

I guess the treadle takes some 'bounce' to go through, would pneumatics provide enough oomph with an input pressure of 150 PSI max without using large diameter cylinders?

A 50mm bore cylinder with a 12mm rod running at 8Bar would provide approx 160Kgs of pushing power.
One cylinder per side would be the equivalent of a very fat man jumping on the foot bar.

I know little of either pneumatics or hydraulics so the following is guesswork.

Air rams would need to be onto the treadle bar area and be long stroke and big. They would consume lots of air. ????

Oil rams are higher power and could be short stroke and mounted on the top blade carrier. I would need an electric oil pump of some description. ????


Imagine cutting several strips off a sheet, maybe 30 cuts. kerchunk kerchunk kerchunk etc etc


Whats better & quicker?

It's my understanding that machines that cut like that are motor driven.

Think gearbox, big flywheel and a cam acting in the blade carrier.
