Im glad you mentioned the green emissions sticker in the post above your thread revival. I picked up a SLK to tidy up for wife's birthday and we were looking into low emissions zones in Germany for a driving holiday to there in it in summer, and there's quite a lot of the zones and they're stricter.
Sadly the SLK is only 28, so 2 more years until freedom, so we'll go elsewhere as the cg (v5) has it down incorrectly as having no euro classification at all unless we can get some stroppy french civil serpant & Mercedes supply the supporting documents themselves to fix the vehicles paperwork.

Since we started touring in 1987 We never did a package deals we used the internet instead to find :- cheap fuels , book and pay for hotels or camp sites or places of interest once we had decided the route we were going touring over . Alison being the book keeper reckons we save a tremendous amount of dosh . Doing the research and planning with our kids was nearly as good as the actual full school holiday touring's .

We've always looked for deals so can't really complain at the cost. It's just the last couple of years it's really gone up. We even looked into buying somewhere over there about 30 years ago. Kind of glad we didn't in the end, but a flat on Wolfgangsee would have been nice.

Half thinking about booking up the ferry again for this June and heading back to Switzerland. May just go ahead and book it and then plan the tour later.

I used the chunnel , very quick 45mins and your on the roads in france, it was less than half the price of a ferry.

I didn't book it in the end as I just missed out on the discounted prices by a few days, I'll look at it again next year. Chunnel sounds good but is a 10h drive to get there and the potential for delays is high so a bit risky.

When we were working in Brussels and Lille we used the Chunnel with some kind of flexible ticketing. You booked a time for the train but could turn up sooner or later, once past customs you waited in a departure lounge with free food and coffee etc. before joining a short queue of vehicles to board, all very civilised.
I was neither driving, booking tickets or paying for them so could not tell you what the premium was over a standard fixed time ticket or what it was called but it was great to be able to finish a job and head back without any time pressures.

You used to be able to turn up 2 hours before or 2 hours after your booked time with no penalty & they would get you on if the there was space. They seem to have stopped it now though. From what I recall the tariff changes to cheaper rate at about 1 pm, we used to book this & turn up early & generally they put us on, the last few times I’ve crossed we had to wait, even though there was space.

I forgot to say that this was pre B word and pre C word so it is a little while ago.
