Transwave static converter - Low output

Hi Everybody,

I know there are some knowledgeable people on here after reading previous posts but I haven't managed to find the answers i'm looking for!

I have a 3 phase screw type car ramp. A 4kw High torque static converter. and a 6Kw single phase generator.

We have hooked it all up but the voltage reading on the output gauge of the converter is only 140ish volts. When we manually open the throttle on the generator the voltage indicated on the converter is 400v.

When we try and operate the ramp without opening the throttle on the generator we can feel the machine vibrating through the control panel.

We thought at first the generator was the issue, tried hooking it up to single phase mains supply and the output reading was slightly lower at 120ish Volts.

Any ideas why the output voltage from the converter seems to be lower than it should be? I'm assuming it should be reading 400/415 as when we open the throttle on the genny we can get the motor to move but it chatters like f*ck!! Tried swapping 2 of the phases and same thing. So now i'm stumped - Seems like i have a selection of issues and I don't know where to start! Short of getting a spark in to have a look!

Any help/advice would be much appreciated!

What model of converter is it you have?

What voltages are you getting across the phases with a multimeter?
I have a Transwave static converter and with the converter on but not connected to a motor the readings across the 3 phases are something like:
420v
380v
80v.
Once the motor is running the readings will equalise to about 400v across the 3 phases because of back EMF (Electro Motive Force).
You need to make sure that any DOLS (Direct On Line Starters) have the coil connected across one of the higher phases.

I was getting the correct voltages across the phases which were something like: 400V between L1 & L3, 400 between L2 & L3 and 160V between L1 & L2.

How do I check the DOLS?

If you are getting chattering from the starter button it sounds like the coil in the DOLS is across the 180v phase, you have to swap the phases about so that the relay doesn't chatter AND the motor turns in the right direction.
There is 5? different combinations for connecting 3 wires to 3 terminals so just try each combination.

Is the ramp configured so the motor only operates when you hold the switch down?
As above the vibration you are feeling is probably the contactor chattering.
Depending on model transwave use different winding's for control circuit. You will need to download the manual.

Personally i wouldn't expect a 6kw generator to run a converter with a 4hk motor.
Volt drop on start up will be to high.

does your convertor have a motor as part of it ?
(googling the name you gave shows some with and some without)

if not.. you could connect up a spare 3 phase motor and have that powered on with the convertor, which should (hopefully) sort things out a bit (bit of a gamble but worth a go)


but... check the 240v supply into the convertor is ok first :-)

according to google (if it's to be trusted) some of th static ones have motors stuck on them anyway :-s


I'd still check the 240v feed in first.... when you fed it from the mains if the extension lead(s) were really long, their could be a decent voltage drop

(low voltage from the generator which picks up once you rev it manually)

yep there called rotary by transawave they do both ihave there static one
