transporting scaffold poles

bit of an odd querey but ive not been able to find any info anywere about loading a transit dropside

im looking to get some scaffold poles to make a mezzanine in my workshop to stash odds and ends away. whenever they come up for sale on ebay theres usualy a few 6.5m lengths (21ft)
when i hired a dropside to shift my lathe i noticed there was a beam running along the back of the cab with two vetical stops either end that look like there for carrying long poles or such like.
does anyone know if 6.5m would be pushing it a bit? cant find the maximum length of load for transporting stuff this way. i think the load bay is 4m so there will be about 2m of pole poking out the top

need to figure a way of shifting poles before i try and buy any

should be fine a couple of the scaffolds ford drop sides for getting into those places that truck is to big

Chris, you can have an overhang of 6ft forward and 6 ft back without marker boards (but do put on a red rag etc on the back). If the total of both exceeds 10ft, you need marker boards, as it becomes an abnormal load. Your 2m poking out the top won't be a problem anyway - just don't go under any low bridges.

If we have long beams etc to transport, we often split the difference i.e let half hang over the cab, and half hang over the back. As long as you have sufficient ratchet straps on, and tight enough, it shouldnt be a problem.
An old hi-viz tied around the back end does the trick nicely!
If your that concerned, cut the tubes in half - use a coupler to fix them back together..or shock horror...weld them back together

google the regulations on abnormal loads as well as dropside 350 (what i can get localy) dimensions then. just trying to figure out how SOH CAH TOA works again

Have a look at page 2 of this document, section "C" it explains the construction and use regs, I keep a copy in the motor cos even the police don't know the rules.

You're just using the load bay dimensions, I would think the part passing over the cab does not overhang until it passes the front bumper so you can add cab & bonnet length.

Don't forget to include the cab Chris.

I'd transport those poles over the back of the cab, and on the tailgate (leave it up - gives the poles a flatter angle). As Paul say, ratchet them down, or if you know your knots, use rope. No bother.

ah! plenty of room to spare then take it theres nothing on the tv? never seen posts answered this fast before!

taking into acount the bonnet it should poke out 31cm and thats with the poles butted up against the tail board rather than over it. can get away with the flatter angle and more overhang but i really dont trust driving a hundred or so miles with noting but my ratcheting skills stopping the guy behind me getting speared

chris ring some local scaffolders see if they selling off old stock they have to renew every so often, ive done it a few times with boards usually cheap and they might drop them off for a few quid ????
