Transporting a Harrison L5A, how much do they weigh?

Question as above really, l've searched "Lathes.co.uk", l can't find the answer listed anywhere, I recon about 400/500 kgs for the bare L5A lathe on a steel cabinet (24" centers)?

Please agree/disagree...by those who know better than me?

I will also probably be asking silly questions about 240volt/3phase inverters/converters soon, so be warned.

Anybody have a spare one for a 3HP motor and l don't if its a 3 x 240v or a 380/415v as yet?

Mine was already separated from the base ,we used a 1t engine crane to load/unload into a trailer,they are top heavy if transporting in one lump although very easy to lever around on pipe on concrete

i bought one from bradford to teeside in a 6x4 trailer on its legs. its got mini wheels and 10 hundred weight indies on it at 70 mph the tires got a bit warm at that speed mind but it was nice and stable :

Knock off some for Norton gearbox but add chucks and tooling on.

I would agree,mine had already been removed and not properly reset,so I had nothing to loose,wouldn't have done it otherwise...

Not sure I agree with that. If the machine is sited on an uneven floor may twist, thus causing the bed to as well: how much can be discussed until the cows come home.

When I had the M300 reground Brian Caddy at Slideway Services said to level and fix the base in place, and then using 3 shims (nuts will do) place 2 at the head and 1 at the Tailstock end. Then using P38 body filler mix enough to sit the bed on resting on the shims. Lightly fix the bolts and allow the P38 to cure. Once cured tighten the bolts and it will be good to go.

Harrison shimmed and scraped the bed to the stand at the factory on the l5's, thats why everyone is recommending people don't split them to move.
The stand on that model was a built up from thick steel sections welded together affair not a usual cast iron foot design so I dont think as prone to creep over time like a cast iron base would be?
I believe they were designed with the intention of just being able to drop them in schools etc without much setup. Even harrison themselves recommend you dont split them apart for moving.

Regardless, to the op, your choice, but I'd move one whole, and Ive done it few times. Some long steel bars through the lifting holes makes it a doddle.

Mine's being moved in one piece, never intended to make more work for myself or disturb the lathe on its cabinet stand , hence the weight question, also its appears its only a L5 not a L5A not that makes any difference to me.

The only other question is the holes in the cabinet to slide bars through for lifting, what diameter are they I know 1 inch bar will go but I have a couple of those large pry bars about 5 ft 6 ins long for moving big bits around with but they have a larger diameter.

Could anyone with a L5 please, measure and let me know the hole diameter.

42mm or thereabouts (it'll be imperial) on my old l5 stand and 30mm on my l5a.
I use a road workers pinch bar through them too.

Last Saturday morning was the appointed day for the move, bars, scaffold tubes, engine crane and various other bits n bobs.

The bare lathe appears to weigh around the 700/750 kgs judging by the way the engine crane handled the lift, had to shorten the jib to the 1000 kgs position to lift the lathe into the trailer.

It took about 45 minutes to load with help and most of this morning to get it into the garage at home.

Anyway heres a photo of the lathe with all its accessories (including a single phase motor not in the picture), a fair amount considering the asking price (600-00 quidlets).

If your asking about the object on the shelf, its a Picador Pulley, I presume its to go on the single phase motor, l won't know until tomorrow when l change the 3 ph motor to 1 ph motor.

The item inside the red line is a taper turning attachment, it bolts to the rear of the bed, an adjustable bar with angle markings fits into the green painted item in the blue line

As the carriage is powered along the bed the attachment moves the cross slide (and cutting tool) at the preset controlled angle cutting a taper.

Taper turning attachment

Nice, norton gearbox too. You have to disengage the cross slide halfnut to use the taper turning attachment, but you'll figure the how of that bit out with some careful thought I'm sure. Does it have the 2.25" threaded chuck fitment?
Stock pulley has 3 drive belts, but you'll find that out when you get the covers off. I keep swearing to go to a single ribbed gates belt on mine, because it always seems like one of the three develops a tight spot first. I've been procrastinating such for about 6 years now though, along with converting it back to 3 phase from single so I can use a vfd to control the speeds better.

Unfortunately its only the smaller chuck thread (3/4 bore headstock), I've ordered 3 new belts from my local bearing supplier should be here today/tomorrow and a new DOL starter for the single phase motor.

It appears the forward/reverse selector switch will work on 1ph as will the suds pump switch...

Does anyone have a unwanted 240 volt suds pump/motor wanting a good/new home....
