Transmission Jack

I'm going to be changing the gearbox in my pickup in the not too distant future, and have access to a 2 post lift. The gearbox is fairly heavy at 80kg or there abouts, not taking the transfer box into account so I want to get a transmission jack. I don't want to spend big money as it's not going to get used often, probably once a year give or take a few months, however I don't want something dangerous either.

What are the cheap ebay ones like? Anyone got any recommendations?

Hi, Can you improvise an oil drum or similar placed under the gearbox and then lift the ramp/vehicle up away from it?

Possibly, but I'd have to source the drum. I don't mind spending some money on the jack as it will always be handy.

Ed China famously would use his roll cabinet.
You just need something strong enough to take weight once raised lift again, shelf, trestles etc

If you have a trolley jack, consider welding a support cradle up out of scrap with a stud in the base which fits in the trolley jack lifting point. This method doesn't require lifting the wheels very high.

Absolutely fine and useful for way more things than just transmissions.

Used it for doing the sills on car, one leg of the lift removed at a time and the transmission jack there just to stop it wobbling.

I have one of the cheap Ebay specials and to be honest I cant fault it. It doesn't droop when there's a heavy load on it.

I have a pair of Chinese gearbox jacks, both ok, some are flimsier than others, smaller ram size etc. take a good look at a few and compare, look at the bottom frame and castors, the one pictured by @Fazerruss looks to be one of the better styles,

Depending on the all up weight of the gearbox and transfer box it might be safer to use two just so things are more stable! Gearboxes can be expensive if dropped, place I worked at dropped one, fortunately I wasn’t involved.

I have found 4x4 boxes/transfer cases much easier to deal with on the floor, I normally pick up the back of the truck with the forklift and use very high lift axle stands under the rear axle. Its then a doddle to pull the gearbox off the back of the engine using a jack and just as easy to refit, some of this stuff is just hard work on a lift thats coming from someone that has one.

I don't think any of my jacks would reach the box if I put it up on axle stands never mind very high lift ones. The point about it being hard work on a lift isn't something I'd really considered though, a bit dodgy too I guess if the box decides it's becoming friends with gravity.
