Transit roof

Hi all, I have a small job on a transit roof to do, 75mmx500mm x2mm plate going over a rust spot, didn't really want to do the job but it's cash at the end of the day, my question is flux core or gas? If it's going to be gas I will have to borrow a friends unit other wise I'll just do it at Home.

That's a big rust spot. Are you cutting a piece that big out of the roof? Gas every time on bodywork anyway.

When you say flux core or gas I assume you mean MIG ?
To be honest if rust is that bad on roof then I'd simply rivet & seal a piece rather than bother welding as probably "the end is nigh" for the whole vehicle.

I wouldn't go 'over' a rust spot either, it needs to be cut out and butt'ed in, in my view, make the patch slightly smaller than the hole by 1-1.5-2mm ish all round, tack each corner then as it cools it shrinks and pulls its self tight otherwise it will buckle all over the place, if its made the exact size

I'd be fairly surprised if there wasn't other more structural stuff to attend to as well..

I think the roof is the only panel on Transit that doesn't normally rot

We pop riveted a plate on one which had lost a twirly vent off the roof. The layer of mastic would have held it but rivets just made sure.

The roof is not a prescribed area BTW.
I fitted two twirly vents in the Sister inlaw's boxer van and one had a balance problem and it tore the roof, quite badly.
I welded the roof, and fitted a new whirly gig and it has been fine but I did brace it, with ply wood tiger bonded under in case the new one lost balance also.
It is quite surprising how strong the vibration can be off them, considering they are wind powered.

they did rust along the seam just rear of the drivers head

Hi I don't know. Know the full details of it it's just hat the customer described, he sent a pic I'll attach but I ended up turning it down any way, his local garage quoted 80 including spraying it, and I weld and fab but don't spray ( saves disappointment). But he I'll attach the photo now....

As you can tell you can't even see it without looking, it's top left but pic doesn't show extent, any way like I say I'm leaving it instead got another job on the go on ss
