transit diesel fuel pump

ps have started putting the engine in a 340R in last few days and we are going to be looking at the prototype 4 wheel drive lotus soon.

Yes there is a lift pump got it off this morn and it does pump by hand so i am back to the injector pump being faulty.
From what i recall the chap who built it gave it more fuel in the mid range when max torque was required and it worked well the thing pulled like a train compared with the non turbo motor we took out.andy

Just 'cause it pumps by hand it doesn't mean it will on the engine. I have the T shirt on that one!!

when mine played up the lift pump would provide enough fuel for the van to idle and you could drive it a short distance at low revs down hill and on the flat but would cough/splutter and die if you floored it.

I was dead sure it was the high pressure pump but as a lift pump was £20 and a piece of cake to change I thought I would try that first before fafing around with the high pressure side.

my low pressure pump worked when hand operated,

Have you tried blowing back to tank? take the feed off the lift pump and blow back,but take the filler cap off first ! there is a pick up filter that blocks on the standpipe, I did one only couple days ago on a smilie banana engine, that was doing the same---- WELL ----does the same, in fact it is an ongoing job every few mths,really tank needs to come off and be cleaned, but he is always in a rush so quick blowback and away.

Advice taken i will check the fuel pipe pump to tank and fit a new lift pump and re fit with the new timing belt water pump and see what happens i will post on here this w/end as the water pump won't be here until friday pm

It'll be the water pump that fixes it !!
honestly I wouldnt change lift pump imho till its proved to be faulty, I've not known them be a particular problem unless sucking air, many transits didnt have one, because the transfer pump on the back of the rotary pump pulls the fuel up. the lift pump was fitted to help bleeding and starting.

totally off topic.... but I've got a transit county too ! (mk4)

Mine is more rust than transit but I loved that old beast, she was petrol but I fitted a turbo diesel, it would pull anything (well nearly), Coz in reality was 6 wheel drive, I fitted 6 landrover off road knobbles to her, and powersteering. I once pulled an out of fuel volvo truck, low loader and canal barge 36ton ish , up the big hill from queensferry and from a dead start on the steepest bit, the driver could not believe it and said no one back at base would believe he had been recovered with a transit. The number of BT transits it has recovered and pulled out of fields up to their bellies and 4X4 off talyacre beach is literally countless. I was the rac contractor and BT were with RAC. The lads used to say 'do you want me to drive as well, to help' I would say 'you can put your foot on the brake and the handbrake on if ya want, coz its comin with me regardless' I used to call it 'THE DENTIST' coz It never failed to extract.

well... mines in bits, and has been for a long time now, just don;t have time to work on it :-(

on the upside, it's parked inside at work so out of the rain etc. and there's hardly any rust on it, guy I bought it from took it to africa for 2 years, and the guy he bought it from had it in africa for years before that, guess the dry air really makes a big difference re: rust

as I'm not planning to drive it that much (few times a year) I've pulled out the 2.5di and have a 4.2 supercharged jag V8 to go in it instead :-o

I helped my change a few of those when I was a kid and then a few when I was a bit older and doing them myself, I guess it depends how many miles you're doing... tho we used to get through vans pretty quickly (they kept getting nicked)

to me those lift pumps are a bit of a service item... not quite like filters and break pads, but they do need changing now and again... it's like when you need a new starter motor, it's a pain in the ass when your old one fails but it's not really a shock, they only last so long :-o

I also love me trani vans i had three brand new ones when i was on the road got rid when they had done 200,000 never changed and engine gearbox or clutch or diff and used them to tow the race car on the weekends, rust always killed them gave them a last MOT and sold them.
But this crew cab flatbed is my tonka toy. i have given it some thought and reread some posts i put on the transit forum when i checked the pump i put a gallon can above the engine and connected straight into the pump and it still would not run correctly it was a couple of years ago and i could not remember the way i tested the pump but i did remember the outcome pump needed looking at. so it is boxed up and off to Diesel Bobs the local place in cardiff the test rig was thrown out cos the electronics on it were dead and a replacement was nine grand thats a lot of repairs before you make a penny. cannot blame them for that. andy

The pump is at Diesel bobs he is telling me to change the pump to a bosch one anyone done this on the fly by wire turbo engine dumping all the fly by wire stuff and running it as just a turbo 2.5Di motor

havn't done one myself, but had a van where it had been done, and loads of people on transit forum have done the same

Tons of people convert them to bosch ve off a plain 2.5di, just put the fuelling up a bit on the smoke screw.

Ive now got a bosch pump and manual pedal and cable, must tackle it sometime, would the timing have to be altered?

Set the engine to tdc on no1, using the rear entry method set the pump to .55mm of lift on number 1 delivery. Try that. You'll soon know if it's too advanced or retarded.

.55mm is what I usually start with when timing up ve pumps that aren't intended for the engine...
