Transferring Paint to a Spray Gun

OK not started spraying yet, I will be shortly, just gathering information and tips at the mo.

Having done a fair bit of DIY Painting in my house I know pouring paint from a 5Ltr Can into a Roller Tray of smaller receptacle for painting can be prone to accidents and always ends in paint down the sides of the can and around the lid which all has to be cleaned up before replacing the lid.

So in anticipation and to avoid having the same issues with my Auto Body paint I thought I'd ask the experts.

How do you guys get paint from the can into a mixing cup for pouring into the Gun Cup? Anyone got any tips on how to do it without spilling any paint or making a mess?

I'll be spraying Epoxy first and this stuff is messy anyway so needs no additional help from me!!!

keep a rag handy. pour from the can into the mixing cup, twist the can as you finish the pour to catch the last of the paint that has made it out of the can, then wipe the side of the can with the rag

use some paper filters , theyre funnel shape

as for mess just put some old papers down or card and clean up afterwards , wipe the rim of the can so its not too grotty

If you are only doing a small amount, such as touch up, you can spoon it out of the can into the mixing cup.

I did similar using the long handled measuring "pot" you find in baby milk powder etc.

Use some wide masking tape over the top of the paint car and make a V shape. You can then accurately pour the paint and the V shape will act as a spout. When you are finished peel the tape off and wipe any excess.

As Steve says you must filter the paint for the spray gun , buy some paper filters, they are a funnel shape, then if you haven't got a proper gun stand which also hold the filter over the gun, just put the filter in the guns cup and pour in the paint lifting the filter as the cup fills, don't fill it right to the top, leave room for air and tipping the gun at angles while you are using it. Talking of air, make sure the hole in the lid is clear.
