It doesn't have to be a clever Mr VOSA, it only needs a Mr VOSA to put a different interpretation on the regs to yours and then you have a fight.

When I did my last CPC module the instructor said a couple of days previously, he had a group of VOSA officers in doing there,s and he said at one point they were arguing amongst themselves about a fairly basic point. They are the ones that are supposed to be upholding the rules.

know exactly what your saying FJ, but were dealing with vosa here and the point is they will say someone has to pay for the cost of transportation wheather its shown on your invoice or not as its not your goods so you would not pick up for nowt so costs are built in some where, the trouble with the examples that are shown by overload with ref to o licence is that it looks black and white, till you read in to it, and find out its not that simple, you get a clever mr vosa and you have a fight on your hands...just saying

Secondly, Dunk, It doesn't sound much use to me doing my trailer licence then does it? Just basically pay some one to pick up/drop off and factor that into my pricing!!!

one way but not fool proof could be to get a flat bed in the 3.5t group, make sure you have the lightest possible chassie so as too carry the most max legal payload, you could bring customers goods in that weight in under that payload, then other stuff over the limit sub it out for collection/delivery and as you say factor that into the price, the hole in this plan thou is knowing the payload from the customer is the correct weight

You dont need an O for cat B cars or vehicles under 3500kg MAM. You do need an O with a combo over 3500kg IF the empty weight of the trailer is over 1050kg, so you get a 3500kg trailer that weighs less than 1050kg empty & you are only carrying your own goods up to 100km & driving is not your main job. You would need a Tacho unless you are exempt under one of the exemptions that are available. You can get the under 7500kg vehicle converted to LPG & be Tacho exempt for instance. Even if tacho exempt you then need to follow the UK drivers hours regs.

Also the dual purpose exemption will apply to a car & trailer combo.

* “Dual purpose” vehicles Under Schedule 3 (2) of the goods Vehicles (Licensing of Operators) Regulations 1995 "a dual purpose vehicle and any trailer drawn by it" is identified as exempt from goods vehicle operator licensing. The dual purpose category generally includes cars, estates, pickups (with a second row of seats (crew cab) only), and domestic 4x4 vehicles such as Land Rovers, Jeeps, and other similar vehicles below 2040kgs unladen weight.
