hi chaps.

im wanting to build a trailer to tow behind me 90
but im wanting to tow it with my nato hitch.

i thought about buying a sanky, but want to build me own to suit my needs.

i need a axle we leaf springs, thought about using a lr axle, but to heavy i think, even we the diff out.

so does anyone have any thoughts on any other sort/make of axle and leafs i could use thats high enough?

why not just use some stub axles

ive always found stubb axles to bouncy, ok when well loaded.

but half a load, things tend to jump up and down, imo.

Why not use the Hubs off the landrover axle and just put a tube between then and use the springs as well , we have made a few like this and never had any probblems with any off them as off yet and been made now for between 6 months earliest and 5 years longest,,
If you designe the axle right and make it a drop axle you can even get it to sit nicely behind a normal family car!!,,,,

by the time you have a hitch and axles you might as well get a sanky

The problem with Sanky's, 1 more than 4 sandwiches in the back and you're over weight

Use the back axle of anything half small and FWD, like say a Golf or Polo unit. They're designed to fit under the floor of a hatch with minimum intrusion, so you could probably cobble up something that makes use of the suspension. (You're essentially looking for a torsion beam axle).

Peugeot stuff tends to have torsion bars integrated for springing too, but I guess srping rate will be too low if you're putting anything heavy on it.

Also - with the drum set up, you can probably cable up the handbrake cable to work as trailer brakes?

I was under the impression that new home-made trailers built out of old car parts ( suspension, hubs, brakes ) are no longer legal, and only "purpose-designed" trailer parts ( i.e. "Indespension"-type bits ) can be used now?

Go up to Witham SV at Colsterworth, Grantham, Lincs. NG33 5LY.
You can buy an old, rough body Sankey from them for about £100 - £150 and strip off the axle and springs etc from it. You can even have one with the disc brakes from them. You will then have the NATO type ring hitch and the handbrake lever set up and the lights to use. Just add a pair of alloys to match your 90 - no need for an extra spare wheel then!!!

well the plan is to use the stubs off a landy reare axle and weld a bit of tube between the two.

a sanky is no good for what i need, looked at them before, and you cant get feck all in them.

been to withams a few times and there sankeys are fetching far more than that.

as for a new build trailer, its 7 yrs old, it is.

already got the hitches, and got me hands on a rr axle, i like a bit of a project.

There are a few on their site at £160 at the mo.
They crush the ones with the rotten bodies or strip them for bits. I got two strippers for £100 each last time (early march). used the axles, springs, hangers, shox and roll bars for other projects. Have a snoop around the lower yard and then ask in the portocabin.

ok, cheers, will have a drive up there, love looking round that place all sorts of goodies to look at
