As to LED bulbs, they may offer some improvement over regular bulbs but quite often the issues tend to be poor/weak/corroded connections to the bulbs.
So I try to use LED light units wherever possible, fit and forget about blown bulbs and rusty connections. Maypole stuff works, some cheap stuff doesn't.

Something to bear in mind though with LED's is that you should add a ballast resistor for the indicators, otherwise the vehicle won't know they are connected and you don't get the beep/warning signal to remind you that there's a trailer attached.
