Hello, All,
It's been a while since I've posted. The spring/summer has kept me busy with fishing and I haven't spent much time with my welding. But now I have a specific issue that combines the two...
A friend noticed damage to a cross-member on his boat trailer. One section of the piece seems to be rusted through, AND the weld holding it to the side of the trailer is broken on both side. I'd like to replace the cross-member with a new one, but I'd really like to do that without having to rewire the trailer. Does anyone have any tricks to protect the wiring during the welding? One buddy suggested pulling the wire taut, on the theory that it will then be suspended in the middle of the channel and not in contact with any metal, but that's probably a long shot.
In case it's not clear from the photos, both the side frame and the cross-member are box material, not a U-channel that would give me access to the wiring from the bottom.
Many thanks for your input!
Charlie
