Never wired one with 8 wires,the extra,purple wire is to divert the current from the towing vehicles fog light to the trailer fog light. The supply wire from the vehicle wasn’t connected to the original trailer socket so I’m cautious to reconnect it to the new socket for fear of damaging the vans electrical system,2001 Mercedes 311 sprinter,would some sort of relay need connecting? Thanks.

If you've not got a 7 pin socket with a fog light cut out switch, just link the two fog light wires.
One should be the fog light feed from the fog light switch, and the other the feed back to the van's fog light(s).
If it's not been connected, and the van fog light still works, there's every chance somebody has bypassed it elsewhere already.
All it means is that the van fog light will stay on with a trailer connected, which isn't really an issue.
IIRC there should be a trailer control module tucked up behind one of the rear light clusters, which handles the indicator bulb failure warning.
There's not much electronics to worry about on that age of Sprinter.

Yes trying to mess with you - he's shown the auxiliary socket connections.
Plenty of info out there on the connections - just make sure to look at thrm from the direction the info presents the connects from.
The switch does exactly what has been said already - wired into the car fog light supply, at the moment it would supply power to the car fog light. When you push a trailer plug into it, it will break power to the car fog light and supply it to the trailer fog light. Stop the glare or it on the front of a trailer or caravan.
