A few years back i rebuilt a decent boat trailer, at the time i was an officer of a rowing club & i let them use it on a regular basis for transporting boats.
I stipulated that on no account was it to be driven into the water. You didnt need to anyway as the boats were light enough to be easily carried.
All was fine for a while & then the brakes seized up, youve guessed it they had backed it into the sea & hadnt washed the salt out. Then it came back from a trip with the jockey wheel twisted round at 45 degrees & a great crease in the chassis leg.
It was pretty obvious that it had been coupled up & kerbed with the jockey wheel down.
Of course they denied responsibility one of the prats even insisting "it was like that when we picked it up".
That was the last time they used it & i then got cast as the bad guy!
Think theres a moral here somewhere!

A friend of mine "lent" his trailer to someone and left it for about 8 months. He needed the trailer and when he went round no-one was about so he just hooked it up and took it. 3 days later the police turned up and arrested him for stealing it. He fell out with the bloke but the police made him return the trailer although neither of them had proof of ownership the bloke's neighbour vouched for him as he had borrowed the trailer.

I had use of a 2 wheel car trailer, the guy had nowhere to keep it and I did so the deal was that I looked after it and he borrowed back occasionally 'his' trailer. It was rough having been used for Banger Racing, and lived the same life and the cars carried so I did the minimum to keep it legal. I made a fair bit of mates rates cash with it over two or three years so decided to tidy it up a bit, fit new mudguards, tyres etc and give it a lick of paint. He turned up one day to 'borrow his trailer' and his eyes lit up when he saw it. I never saw it again......

Make one that you can unbolt and dismantle for storage. I have a number of 500Kg rated axles that used to live under diesel welder/generators. They would form the basis of an ideal bike, jet-ski trailer. I've got wheels, draw bars, hitches etc. If you want to talk about obtaining one contact me via PM.
I'm another one who would be very wary about sharing it. I borrowed a mates trailer once, it was fairly new but when I loaded it up for a tip run a wheel bearing collapsed 100m down the road. Turned out that the guy who made it used any old hubs, wheels and tyres from the nearest scrappy. Fortunately we quickly agreed he would pay for the bearings and I fitted them - no idea what car they came from so he had to pay a lot for bearings from the local bearing supplier. Later on when he was using it the frame snapped just behind the hitch due to poor design.
How do you decide who's using it most so who pays for any repairs? if something goes wrong you'll end up arguing about who actually owns it and who's responsible, could get ugly quickly!
Now I own my own trailer, I know its in good condition with new heavy duty tyres, the lights work, it has a proper number plate, the brakes work, it hasn't been abused and nobody borrows it! I don't use it much and it does get in the way at times but I know I can chuck just over a ton in it and drive anywhere with no worries.

I regular use my trailer for carrying portable scaffold tower. its allways locked up in the-garage but I allways take the tower out and re load when needed. a bit of a pain but if it was -left in sumeone might break in and tow the lot away ready loaded

I really want a sankey for behind the disco so I can chuck a tent on, but ******** if I know where I can keep it! And I'd never lend anything again, if my mates want owt shifting, cutting down with the chainsaw or welding, I go round and do it. Lent my ex boss my saw to trim a fern. Came back with a bent bar, the 3 good chains that were with it were goosed and every crevice had soil innit. Turns out "trimming" meant jamming the bar and chain into the X ground to hack roots out
