You seem to have missed my point. I understand that now any trailer over 3.5t requires coupled brakes due to EU law but I was questioning when that rule got introduced.

I have a recollection of reading somewhere in some official documents relating to the Sandringham that it did not require coupled brakes to achieve maximum towing capacity hence why I'm asking when the 3.5t limit got introduced.

Before my time but as I have never seen a trailer over 3500kg with over run brakes I would say it was a long standing UK rule that predates EU stuff.

Is the Sandringham plated over 3500kg MAM?

I used to have a 110 built by SVO which was plated for towing 4500kg. It had a plug in hydraulic connector on the rear crossmember, a bit like the airline PCL fittings Which was for the trailer brakes connection. I never had occasion to use it though.

The hitch was a NATO thing which I removed and replaced with a standard ball.

So you need a C1 and a C1E un restricted ie not pre 97 when towing over 750kg (or C and CE).
You will need active brakes to tow over 3500kg. The cars ability cant override C&U regs.

Thanks for putting me in the picture that the coupling may have a different weight limit to the hitch.
Tested now with the heaviest spread load I could find. About 2300kg. Very thick oil that sinks in water.
Trailer didn't protest at all. Suspension didn't move much either.
Obviously still have trailer jacks etc to fit.
Now the downforce is 150kg laden to the max and 90kg unladen.
Engine on top as 100L different in IBCs.
