Trailer chassis id plate

As you may know I am rebuilding a 1930's trailer, the chassis plate is readable but in poor condition so I would like a new one, but obviously I don't want to pay a fortune so any one on here know how to get one made?
Only quote I have is £136.50! for two as thats the minimum, I didn't realise it was so expensive

I'd spend a few evenings with a tin of model paint and fine brush restoring the original myself as it's part of the trailer history - flaws, defects, etc.

Could you not make one yourself? Ali, then mask the details, paint black, remove masking and then stamp the numbers? Fiddly but doable I would have thought?

if you go to a sticker / vinyl wrapping place get them to cut it for you in their vinyl plotter but just on to the sticker backing paper, then use that to mask off and paint. saves you trying to cut it out yourself with a craft knife.

Thanks never thought of that, I do have some punches but a more modern font

You could acid etch a new plate at home using Ferric Chroride. Once you scanned your existing plate into your PC, you can clean up the image using a photo editor and print your "new" image to a piece of transparent film and then photo etch a new plate. Here's the photo etched plate I created for the supercharger oil tank (this car's blower is lubricated by total loss) on one of my cars. I didn't have one to copy, so I created the image for the plate using a PC drawing package before photo etching the plate. BTW, once I get this car out there (long term project) it'll be interesting to see how many of those rally field "rivet counters" spot that I didn't quite reproduce the text as per the 1930 original

You can draw straight onto the metal with an etch resist pen and etch the plate directly -this one was done before the availability of PC graphics packages. The details of the dashboard kill switch plate on the dash of this car were drawn straight onto the stainless sheet. The text was created using Letraset as the resist.

Thanks I will look in to it, I also hate rivet counters, I feel its the rivet counters who keep the price of classics so high and keep us normal folk out.

Standards lads, stanards! We all like things done right. Just scan through the threads on welding assessment on this site to see some of the comments. Somebody has to set them and the rest of us has to try and reach them and In my case I often don't/cant!
