I got my M6 this year, 2E next year

A lot depends on area, in West Yorkshire its very active, bit less so now im in Hull, however i am installing a 2m/70cm mobile in my Landy in the new year, as an upgrade from the Baofeng

Use my scanner a lot these days, plenty of military and marine activity, I find airband a bit boring unless i can hear both sides of the conversation. I have a proper external antenna and that helps.

Ive asked Santa for a shortwave radio to use at home, lets hope ive been a good boy

@Kayos it's probably too late to change your letter to santa but it would be better to get a HF rig as you can listen to 0 - 30 mhz then transmit when you get your ticket.

Amateur radio covers a wide range of interests and there is plenty of 'general chat' on the HF amateur bands, you can find specialist groups talking about aspects of the hobby, there are groups that like to chase very long distance contacts, groups that want to compete against each other to make as many contacts in a given time as possible, groups that just want to keep in touch and chat about their dahlias and their latest hip operation

You may be able to use the audio out into a pc to see some of the digital modes?

That's a common misconception and interpretation of the regs often promoted using peer pressure and 'band policemen', in fact discussion of a general nature have always been fine and the early licensee's were even allowed to play one piece of music from a gramophone! that is no longer permitted . Of course, like this forum some subjects are actually forbidden and that's a good thing. General chat is meant to be secondary to the technical aspects of the hobby, that boat has already sailed and sometimes a licensee may in fact never actually have any great technical interest in the hobby other than to use it for general chat. That maybe isn't in the best interest of the hobby but that's the way it is ..

But yes, generally licence conditions are probably a little more relaxed than when I first became licensed.

I always preferred construction to operation so it really doesn't concern me too much.

the secret to success here is getting the antenna away from the noise sources, a long wire was always the traditional route into short wave reception but these days it would not be my recommendation. Yes quick and easy but not always successful for a number of reasons. Significantly the long wire will be receiving signals all the way back to the connector on the receiver which will no doubt be close to those noise sources like TV's. broadband routers, phone chargers , LED lights etc etc... What works well for receive only is to get the antenna away from your electronic devices and connect it back to the receiver using coax or cat5 cable. Its not just as simple as connecting a random wire back to the receiver with coax as there are a couple of hoops to jump through to stop that coax being part of the antenna and receiving that noise just like the random long wire.. but if you are interested in those hoops just PM me and I'll gladly bore you rigid with how to set up a good antenna. There are a number of designs of small active receive antennas that are simple projects to build and they will in ALL circumstances beat a random long wire.

While on the mad tidy up today i was looking for the boxes with radio and CB stuff in i found these..

And 2 of these but i was looking for my old York CB from the early 80's to see what model it was it was the bigger one that had a few mods...

The should be a letter followed by a number (e.g. A9,K2 etc.) on the back which you can look up the band it works on.

I think many of them were used for taxis and that sort of thing, some are gas board but "trunked" not that i know much about it.

DSD plus is a A to D digital program that works, am running it on a Vertex VX2500e simple interconnect to computer Pin2 deemp out pin5 ground to mic in on computer a lot of info on set up on net a de emphasis out on a scanner would work then you could scan for digital.

I think these were originally purchased to use om pmr on a farm with more power...but as you say 400-440Mhz killed that idea along with the legal side lol. I think there was a programmer with them at some point, I got chatting to a guy who was soying you can install a new operating system iin them but i was out of my depth there..
