I posted before about a chap my BIL knows, Bought some stainless kegs from a brewery Been closest a fire, he made some really nice items BBQ's etc, Police raided the sale/fair where he was selling them and he got locked up over night, He apparently bought them legit from the brewery but the guy selling them didn't have the authorisation to do so, I believe that they told him its not possible to own secondhand kegs, So locked up overnight and didn't get his items back,

There was a company for many years that sold bear barrels repurposed as radio cavities for antenna systems, they were at the time call Aerial Facilities and after several name changes are now part of Cobham Wireless. Later in production they went to square units to fit 19 inch equipment racks.

I used to work for them years ago, oh my god nearly 40 years ago .

I really must get round to taking a HAM license, My mate has one but i just like to listen in on random chat on the beofeng cheap walkie i have connected to antenna i got from a guy who used it for philips/simoco fm1000, fun stuff.

You'd find it more interesting if you got a HF reciever.

If you are just curious there are many web connected receivers if you just want to have a listen around, HF is interesting and gives results with simple setups - conversely to engineer a good VHF or UHF setup takes a lot more effort and knowledge, the results also vary over time. If someone new to the hobby only has limited time then yes HF is probably the best starting point.

Amateur radio covers a wide range of interests and there is plenty of 'general chat' on the HF amateur bands, you can find specialist groups talking about aspects of the hobby, there are groups that like to chase very long distance contacts, groups that want to compete against each other to make as many contacts in a given time as possible, groups that just want to keep in touch and chat about their dahlias and their latest hip operation.. its many things to many people. There are groups that use Morse code, some interface to their computers to transmit data modes even television pictures.

It can be boring, geeky but even exciting, but that depends on the interest of the individual and whether what they hear captures them or not.

Outside of the specific amateur bands there is plenty utility traffic still to hear, some military some marine etc although most interesting stuff is encrypted and / or most often on satellite comms these days .. but you still come across some interesting stuff from time to time. Weather transmissions at the airports, marine safety alerts etc. You can listen to the SW broadcast stations delivering their propaganda which can be funny sometimes.

As a warning though, if you live in a typical urban environment you will tend to hear something these days that is very unwelcome, there is a continually increasing 'soup' of noise masking the radio bands. Every phone charger, every new TV, every bit of broadband cable adds a bit more noise to the spectrum often masking weaker more interesting stuff... listening to HF in a town is not a happy activity these days.
