Trade Test

My current CAD contract is nearly up, and I've been looking at jobs - I'm a steel detailer, so I search for any steelwork related job vacancies. I noticed that they are looking for welders somewhere in Rosyth, the entry criteria being a trades test which is a butt welded joint at a 45 degree incline.

What would that be? 2 plates running towards you overhead? Can't quite picture it.

Not that I'm applying - although I'd be interested to see if I could pass the test....

From your description they're talking about testing in the 6g position i.e. pipe welding. Regarding passing the test... various different criteria depending on the 'code' being worked to (several threads on the subject, search the forum for 'codes'). For this sort of work or test there'll be a welding procedure in place, basically some instructions covering how the joint is to be welded and in the case of a test your coupon will be subjected to various tests- visuals, macro or micro etches, bend tests, corrosion tests etc. depending on the material and welding code
