Tractor pulling

I recorded tractor pulling from motors tv on sky and was amazed at the engines they use iv seen it in this country and they were either Chevy v8's or diesels with 1,2,3 or even 4 turbos

Then they had the modified tractors. Now this did make me laugh as the others aren't considered modified!!?

Well until the other ones rolled out I saw exactly what they ment. There's two tractors with helicopter turbine engines and a few tractors with more than one engine, one even has 5 supercharged v8's!!

How do they transfer the power output from the cranks to the single props? Is it a multi gearbox of sorts?

yea it is sick to say the least. I prefer the diesel smokey ones.

Years ago a team of instructors from Massey-Ferguson built one called the nipper. It started life as an MF 265, putting out 62 hp. By the time they finished with it, it was putting out 440! Perkins didn't believe it possible...until they dyno'd it. After all that, it was still running a standard back end and transmission as well!

I've only ever seen it at GDSF and I don't know if the tractors there are amongst the biggest and meanest. However some of the them do give off an almighty roar and bellow thick, black smoke. Very impressive.
