Toughened glass

Right.. I need a new tailgate screen and I know for suuuuure I'm not gonna get it from a breakers as I want it slightly different from stock.

I'm having difficulty getting any prices/information about it so I thought I would ask on here

It's totally flat, about 1500m wide and 1000m tall.. It needs to be made off toughened/tempered glass? Or possibly safety glass..

Has anyone else had anything like this done?

I would have thought any windscreen supplier could cut flat laminated glass to size.

any glass and glazing firm will stock and cut laminated .it doesnt have to be done by a windscreen firm

Any half decent glass firm can supply toughened, Its normal glass that is sent for heat treatment, If its for a tailgate you should use toughened not laminated as the laminated doesn't like be slammed shut, thats why they use toughened in door windows.

On the road it will need to be toughened to ECE R43 there is a company in the west midlands, I will drop the link on here tomorrow also you could approach plastics 4 performance for a plexi road legal window

Hmmm found a few glass places around here today (Chester) So I will ring around a few places and see what the score is..

If the glass is toughened, does that mean it will break apart into them tiny little, marginally less harmful pieces like normal auto glass does? Or in the event of an accident will it act like gigantic blade beheading me and all my passengers as the rest of the car crumples around us?

thats strange shop doors shower doors and door pannels are all made of laminate glass , the only time they will crack or chip is when theres been pressure of a sharp object hitting it. more automobile companys are starting to use in side and rear windows now

Sometimes they use toughened glass laminated

Makes it a bit more awkward for burglars wanting to "walk straight in"...

Worked for many shower enclosure companies and the trend is always toughened glass as it breaks into bits not shards

there's a good reason for using toughened glass ,it's cheaper than laminated!!! toughened glass is a bit like case hardened steel,it's up to 5 times tougher to break but once it's surface is pierced with a sharp object [& it can be quite easily] it breaks into small pieces & burglars love it as they're straight in whereas lammy holds its integrity.

I've never seen lammy de-laminate,I can only assume that it was faulty or possibly ''home made'' when reg 16 came in you could buy the resin & border tape to make your own laminated glass, of course a large proportion of windscreens are laminated now.

you're talking about the old celluloid laminated & the guys not going to buy any of that at your glass merchants, as stated I've not seen modern lammy with vinyl interlayer de laminating.

I have. Seen it a few times on cars even from the late 90s.
My 1996 Saab 9000:

That screen dated from 1999 - not helped by the corrosion around the frame caused by the windscreen-fitting muppets scratching it to hell when they took out the original screen.

It delaminates reguarly in old Ford & Chevy trucks, It goes milky around the edges where the moisture gets in.

And newer Suzukis!, my wifes 8 year old Vitara windscreen went the same

So the side windows are toughened not laminated? Which means I cannot cut them? Had a quote for a tailgate glass for £60 which didn't seem too bad to me.. A guy I work with, his mate got one done for thirty quid though! So I'm gonna look around a bit yet..

ost are toughened these days... far safer than laminate... thouhg it can be both.

you need a template to the exact size & shape, then they cut & toughen at teh factory.... once done thats it,.
