Torque wrench questions?

I remember reading a thread with advice on Torque wrenches and sure someone mentioned about alot of them are made by the same company but rebranded.

Now in my quest to build up my tools and not borrow off people I need to buy my own. All the tools I have reguarly borrowed have been Snapon as I know a few typical Snapon adicts.

I did go to Machine Mart and I had a look at the Clarke 3/8 Torque wrench, got to admit I never bought it as it looked and fealt cheap, I know there around £20.

Ive seen online Teng tools & Norbar going for around £35 ish

So then roll on the advice or recumendations for the cheaper end of Torque wrenches. Got to be 3/8 as thats my main size and covers all bike work.

I replaced my cheap naff one with a couple of halfords pro ones. About 60-70 quid each, tho with a trade card 20% off.
Perfectly happy with them, but then I don't use them day in day out.

I've got a 1/2" machine mart one which we brought a couple of years ago. Now I don't use it everyday but when I do I've been more than happy with its performance, I woudl expect the 3/8" version to be exactly the same. I've also got a teng tools 3/8" one, once again I don't use it every day but it is also a nice piece of kit - easy to adjust and read the setting, mine also has the angular gauge on the head which is great for doing cylinder heads. On balance I would say the general quality of the teng tools wrench is better than that of the machine mart one.

In the past I've used various different Halfords ones over the years for an extra long 1/2" wrench down to the 1/4" baby and although they've all work well I never liked having to pull the drive square out to change the direction but that is purely a personal preference thing. I'm not sure if they have changed the design to incorporate a conventional ratchet head now.

Had a Sykes Pickavant torque wrench for donkeys years,3/8 drive 8- 80 ft/lb,like the rest of the guys don't use it every day but a nice piece of kit when you do.Worth checking them out.

If you can't afford or don't want to pay for Snap-On, go Britool or Norbar.

This is what I use. Deflecting beam type that never goes out of adjustment. This one -3/8 - goes up to 50 ftlbs then I use the Grey(Canada) which is 1/2 inch and goes from 40-200 ftlbs. The deflecting beams are great if you can see the scale, but if you dont have the room then a click type might be more appropriate.

Chears all, well I got it in the end for £28.30 inc p&p.

That particular one on ebay new are over £70+ so think I got a bargin, hopfully it will be when it arrives.

Its not that I dont know much about torque wrenches it is just ive always had tools supplied for free, never had to buy myself and alway had my hands on Snapon gear.

However I am not a fan of Snapon, alot of my tools are eather the lifetime Clarke Pro tools or Bergen. I like quality BUT I am a major bargin hunter.
