torque wrench calibration / range question

Id like to buy one of the old MHH torque wrenches for doing low torque things like cam belts etc.

Theyre old, so they wont have been calibrated for years.

Im not working on space craft, so do i just ignore this, or do i send it off somwhere?


And, for the second question, say i have a target of 11nm (97.358204 lb-in) would you buy a device that runs to 240lb in, or 120lb in

(i would imagine 120, but are these things supposed to be used more in the middle of their range or the ends of the range - again, my target is around 97 lb-in)

You can easily check it yourself with a vice, a weight, a rule and a bit of maths.

Thats my usage too, probably less than that in fact. My 1/2 inch one is a Norbar, and its got to be forty years old.

Where do you get them done, and how much does it cost ? A while ago I dallied with the idea of replacing them, but didn't, as quality tools seem hard to get now.

I bought one of these after a bad torque wrench incident and checked it with a brand new Halfords ( Norbar) 1/2" wrench and it was spot on.


The old wrench was clicking off 30Nm under spec which is why my son's wheel nearly fell off!
