I was listening. I hoped at first it would be some fantastic modern super efficient diesel powered steamer... but no, just a replica 1950's/60's jobbie. Nothing wrong with that, per se, but it would be nice to see a bit of useful progress.
Its the trouble with most steam projects tho si, theres little interest in future developments just resurrection of the "glory days".......... Iv started doing a bit of reading on the 60s/70s built gas turbine engines now there was some forward thinking..
The thing is, I really like steam engines cos they're quiet. My old ex marine engineer buddy goes on about the enormous triple expansion ship engines he used to work with, just quietly chuffing away. I'd love to put a small one in the boat.
The problem is all the old engines were scrapped, and boiler technology doesn't seem to have improved enough to make the concept worthwhile. I mean, a big old diesel is a fine thing, but wouldn't it be great to dump the ear defenders?
incredibly simple devices really Si, just a jet engine, with a second set of vains to drive the generators...... which meant they were amazingly reliable with only 2 real moving engine parts, they'd then stick 2 of these suckers in a train, massive DC generators and bobs your uncle 1000HP at the wheals, Of course the massive downside is the lack of fuel economy......
I know what you mean about the steamers, look at some of the massive beam engines, lifting maybe 500 ton and the nosiest part being the valve gear.... but as you say there's little improvement that has been made since fire tubes were put into the boilers...which was turn of 1900s??? Im guessing.... some are slightly more efficient raised tubes, buggering about with the firebox etc, but your probably talking teaspoons of improvement..
