Torch troubles

I recently replaced the torch on my welder with a new Eurotorch - and I have a couple of issues. When I doing a vertical weld, which is most of the time, the wire seems to come out unevenly, which means I get a very poor weld. It almost seems to pulse - when it doesn't when I weld on a horizontal surface. Any ideas?

Also, when my torch, either the shroud or the tube leading up to the shroud from the torch body touches the object I am welding, the arch stops, and trys to arch through the torch body or shround. Is my torch rubbish?

Any ideas appreciated.

It sounds as if you may have spatter or a blob of weld metal in the shroud which is bridging the current from the tip, give it a clean out, or try a new shroud and contact tip.

Have you fitted a new torch to a euro equipped welder or a conversion kit to a non euro welder?

Sounds like the shroud has spatter lodged between the shroud and the torch (bridging the insulator.)

As for the pulsing: What size wire and liner? Could be you have the wrong size liner. I find 0.6mm wire does not work well with liners over 0.9mm. This becomes more of a problem on long torches (over 3m.)

Thanks for the responses. I will look at the shroud tomorrow. No doubt it will be that. I need to pop over to the welding shop for some new tips, so I might get a new shroud as well. Have to say I did wonder why it wasn't doing this with the spot welding tip.

It's a big machine, a Miller, and is fitted to take a Eurotorch. However, I am not sure what size the liner is, it is a 4 meter torch, and I use 0.6mm wire. Might just try replacing the liner as well.

Was the previous torch 4m long? I find 0.6mm hard to feed through a long torch, as if it's trying to curl up inside the liner, and it can give a stuttery action. I have enough trouble with 3m, let alone 4m, and it's worse when welding vertically. Perhaps there's a specific liner available for 0.6mm wire? I couldn't find one. Mine is for up to 0.8mm and I'm sure the 0.6 rattles around in it. My welder feeds 0.8mm beautifully through the same torch.

I use 0.6mm on a 4m torch with no problems.

I do have 4 different liners for the torch: 0.6mm, 0.9mm, 1.2mm and 2mm.

My torch came with a 1.2mm liner and 0.6mm wire was stuttery as you said. You could grab the end of the wire with your fingers and push/pull it in/out about 3/4 of an inch.

With the 0.9mm liner it is not bad. Have not tried the 0.6mm liner.

0.6mm liners seem standard here but not normally stocked at a local supplier.

Any idea where I can get a 0.6mm liner? I will be going to my local welding shop tomorrow, but not sure they will have one and will probably have to settle for a 0.6-0.9mm liner.

Go online to one of the sites. Welders Warehouse might be a start.
No connection, just bought a euro torch and conversion kit from them. Transformed my welder.

You need a blue liner for .6 &.8mm wire.

I do have a blue liner. It's specified for 0.6-0.9mm wire. What I was wondering was whether I could get one that was only for 0.6mm wire, like the one shenion is talking about.

never heard of 1,try & work with your torch as straight as poss' check theres no kinks in the wire or rust[ accentuated recently with our extremes of temp' variation].

Got a blue liner now. Still some slack in the wire, but no where near as bad as before. Had a red one in it before. Huge difference to the quality of the welds I am producing. Also got a new shroud as there was a huge piece of splatter in the old one which was causing the short.

normally a good clean out should be fine for a shroud

you should hardly ever need to replace it
