torch getting very hot

is this normal my welder at school get very hot its a miller something
its so hot i had to get a thick glove instead of a tig glove
i would think it would get hot but not that hot not just the cup but the hole torch and for very short welds just a couple inches
also what the cup made out of? i was thinking ceramic

Hi All!

patreusch, sounds like a very bad connection somewhere! Most likely at the torch end of things! You should be able to weld for quite a considerable time before the actual TIG torch gets hot enough to require a MMA gauntlet type thingy to hold it!

what are you welding? if its something like thick ali your torch may be too small to handle the power... solution - bigger torch or water cooled torch....

Most likely the power cable is frayed inside the torch body causing it to get hot, I have the same fault with the Interlas torch on my dialarc and when I investigated it I found about half the thickness of the cable was frayed away.

it wasn't quite so bad today mostly miged though i don't think its the thickness of the material because its like 18 or 20 gauge
