Whenever I've looked into insuring tools left in a van, all the security bars, exemptions and the premium they wanted made it not worth doing. I had the van backed up to the garage at my house every night in a nice area and took out some stuff but I still used to wake up sweating with every noise. I was a mobile mechanic and you simply can't have 20 grand's worth of glittering snapon tools in the back of a van unless you never leave it at all. I had good quality but mostly fairly old tools (Britool etc). I had a centre partition and I always made sure if I left the van to get say, parts or an MOT that the back looked, well, pretty oily and worthless as much as I could. But really, don't leave anything in a van you can't afford to lose. I never left laptops/or really expensive kit in the van at any time.
I never did actually get robbed in 36 years on the road (after my apprenticeship and ten years at a garage) but I had no signwriting whatsoever on the van and I did actively use every trick I could think of to make the van look simply not worth the effort. I only took any more expensive kit for particular jobs but even without them it would have cost me 5 or 6 grand to replace everything I had on board if the van got emptied.

never bother with tool insurance most gear picked up at autojumbles and the van never gets left out of sight on jobs and its alarmed at home theres no chance of anyone getting near it in the drive without infrared beams going off and a sounder in the bedroom and floodlights

Pir thing in the back connected to a god awful wailer.
Pals dad used to cart eels from the fens to the Netherlands. You cannot let the pumps stop working on the tanks on the lorry or they die. He had a railway horn connected to the air system via a valve so if the pump goes off it unloads the reservoir through the horn. You can hear it from the accommodation on the boat when it’s on the car deck apparently. Which was its intended use.
