Try Cromwell Tools, they have some stuff called 01 tool steel, it's very reasonably priced

I just use Ground Flat Stock which I buy from the cheapest supplier I can find on eBay, it keeps a good edge once heat treated and I use it for press shearing tools and spindle moulder cutters.

Ground flat stock is 01, commonly known in the trade as Gauge plate they are all one and the same. For some reason tool suppliers have adopted ground flat stock as the generic name these days. 01 is only indicating the actual grade of the material.

@ 500e You may struggle a bit to get the 650 length you want. Standards for imperial are 18 inches for metrics its normally 500mm. Some dealers can get longer if they have a Uk supply. If it's from abroad they wont be able to help in a hurry if at all. You never know but its unlikely someone will have that length laying about as its a non standard.

msc industrial are on of the the more common suspects for GP. Look at their virtual catalogue, top right hand and GP starts on page 1882.

As mentioned Cromwell tools is the other main supply, but there web site is hard to find what you want so you are on your own there!

If any of the above can get it beat them up hard for a decent discount, without it you would be looking at maybe 50 quid.

Failing that do google search there were still (last time i looked) a few places up north rolling and grinding GP.

The stuff I got from cromwells is for making a knife blade, it's 500mm long and is made in Sheffield. When I get back home at the end of the week I can check the packaging to see if it has a makers mark

I have bought a lot of the GFS in cromwells for various projects over the years, its very accurately sized (being ground) and really simple to heat treat. I've made things like small chisels for cutting steel and also used it for springs. If i were you thats what i would buy.

Our local tool / hardware supplier can get us 1000mm long GFS / O1 when we need it, they do have to get it in for us but only normally takes a couple of days.
It usually comes from Sheffield Gauge plate, the link (if it works) should give you imperial & metric sizes with a rough idea of cost

Although it says 2012 on these price lists they are pretty much the list prices we are told before our discount

Small items we'll flame harden ourselves on the hearth but larger items we'll send to the professionals (we use Wallwork Birmingham it's around £2/kilo to harden & temper but minimum order is about £35)

Yeah loads of places sell 1000mm. It's just that the 500mm is more traditional length.
