my son had a lesson in engineering cancelled, was given a word search/ crossword thing to do. The question was roughly what do you call the handle used on a tap. Answer was Dwang not wrench as I expected. A dwang to me is a piece of wood placed horizontally between two uprights. Anybody heard a tap wrench being called a dwang before. It's another Scottish thing apparently

Hmmm no. Only use I've heard is the equivalent to (as you say) noggin.

I've heard them called dwangers while working in Newcastle - called that because that's the noise they make when you whack them into the web of beams!

Little known fact.
Alberto Dwang, a Scottish/Italian emigrant invented the modern tap wrench in Michigan in 1873.
The lapsed almost immediately lapsed into obscurity as the term Wrench became institutionalised.
Look him up on wikipedia. An interesting story; another unknown hero.

I know Dwang as the chain tensioners used on low load trailers for securing plant etc. I.E. an over centre lever or a screw type with ratchet.
