Tool Insurance

Hi guys...

has anyone come across my little conundrum,

basically my house insurance wont cover tools in my new 'shed-o-dreams', some others i've called will cover 'hobby' tools up to £2k but i reckon if i total all my gear up i reckon it's more £5k and obviously they are for professional use,

although the insurance broker did say they could do the £5k and 'are you sure they aren't just for your hobby sir..cough cough. but sure as hell once some pikey scum has had my gear away in his greasy paws, they'll turn round and say so sorry sir that amount of tools is obviously pro.

basically does anyone know of any companies that'll do it, i've googled all arvo and managed to get small business insurance but 1 i'm not a small business and 2 they wont cover them in a shed/ out building, just a pain in the $rse...!!

Im with Lloyds TSB insurance, i questioned about tools kept in a garage, not a problem.
Not sure about a shed though, might be worth a ring....

I've got itemised tools to the tune of a couple of k or so, and they are just my hobby, nothing else. Insured no problem.

umm yeah but it all the small bits and pieces i can see adding up, ratchet sets, planes, and all those other useful bits that are pretty irreplaceable and more expensive to replace than i 1st thought, looking back through my accounts in the last 5 yrs theres some pretty hefty wedge been spent... and not just to reduce the tax bill...!!

Insurance is a racket in my opinion, but something we all have to have. Work on the principle that if you have to claim they will do their utmost to try & squirm out of paying up So, for thing's like tools, security is paramount; better to spend a few hundred quid on security to stop the thing's getting nicked in the first place than give some cheap suited smarm the same sum every single year!
Public liability cover is a different ball game & absoloutely essential for contractors etc.etc...given the parasitic nature of lawyers (and the hard up scrote!)

Agree with you there, but if they want into your building they will get in no matter what you have security wise, I have been there better off having some insurance. A year later I found out who they were one hurt for a long time,I bet he still does not know for why he got the hiding only two to go.

I would seriously reconsider leaving all that kit inside a garden shed (unless its brick built, where do live BTW)

Coversure might be worth a ring, they have arranged decent cover for our high risk items. They provided 24hr theft for goods in transit & liability for gas cylinders which is always a tricky conversation!

You could explain that it "was for professional use at one time" hence the high value. Good luck.

when i was calling around for contence insurance i was told off the record that i would not get insurance on a wooden workshop.

What about one of those secure stores (like on building sites) or a modified shipping container type building?? I bought a 20 footer to secure kit in rickety old barn I once rented. Only thing is they a PITA to move.

Hi All,
I used to be insured by Prudential, now Churchill and today RBS - I think. Who knows who will own them tomorrow?

But they have classed all my hobby tools, lathe milling machine welders and everything else as house contents and will cover them up to £40K, in writing. I've not talked to them about gas bottles, but they seem to be happy, if kept outside the workshop.

Yep that's why they have an itemised list from me - and it gets updated every year at renewal
