Tool for cleaning paint/rust off of steel.

Hi all

Could I please have your advice on the best tool for cleaning the paint/rust off of the scrap metal I am using to practice welding on?
I have a 4 1/2 inch grinder so recommendations for that would really be appreciated.

flap discs are the best bud

As above, flap discs are great. Poly discs are better at taking paint off without the metal, just don't clip anything not flat or they disintegrate

For practicing welding? Use a grinding disk.

Flap disks are great, but are finer and much better at tidying up afterwards. If the metal is rusty and you want it clean to weld they aren't as good at getting in deep enough. Sure, it can be done but takes longer and wears the expensive disk out.
Save them for the better jobs.
Wire wheels on grinders are pretty good to be aware of for times when you want to clean stuff off that isn't flat and not ideal for a grinding disk.

For welding practice a grinding disk shoved into the metal will get the rubbish out better than anything, and prettiness isn't relevant.

Wire wheel first on the grinder get the worst off and any pain before using a sanding disc and backing pad.
