Has anyone tried this?

Toner transfer printing with a laser printer and transparency film by Coverton

The toner transfer method with an iron obviously doesn't work that well on finished 3D printed parts because the heat will deform the object. But the heat from the molten filament while printing the first layer will melt the toner and transfer it to the printed part.Print the mirrored image/text...

Quite a good idea…

I built a bench power supply for tinkering with, put it all in a metal enclosure, then printed a front panel layout thing onto a transparency using a laser printer, sprayed the back side with some blue paint (rattle can) then stuck the label thing onto the front….looked ok to me…
But the idea of printing onto a 3d item sounds great, if you got a laser printer…

If I had access to a laser printer i would have tried it by now.

No, not yet. There's a laser printer at work I can use, but it'll probably be a while before I get round to it.
