toilet valve question

replaced the valve /ballcock in the toilet as it was always dripping and coming out the overflow

ive fitted a new one , the water fills sharpish then slows down to a trickle , but doesnt shut off cleanly it still drips for a few mins , is this normal or should it be a nice on /off?

a slight touch upwards on the arm shuts it off 100% so its telling me it does work but cant really see what i could change

I’d say it’s normal for s standard ball valve but not the equilibrium type. Bit rusty on ball valves though.

Yes that’s normal. Pressure to close it is proportional to the water level. Did it come with two different inserts for high or low water pressure?
If you flush the loo, leave it to fill and go back ten minutes later is it still running/dripping?

not aware of any inserts unless there was something in the pipe? whats that about then ?

also ...on screwfix the valves seem to have part 1/2/3 in the title , whats that about , i just got one that looked the same

doubt its dripping after 10mins...just assumed it ought to fill then stop completley rather than drip for a while

You often get valve seat inserts with a ball valve which you fit dependant on the water pressure. The screwfix listing says it’s high pressure which suggests it’s got the a high pressure insert/orifice as standard.
Part 1,2, and 3 are BS 1212 classifications of ball valve types. Yours is a part 2. If it was a part 3 (diaphragm/equilibrium type) it would shut off a bit sharper as the float valve closes a weep hole and water pressure shuts the valve off cleanly.

Ignore what I said about part 3 ball valve. Just checked and I think it’s jsut that they’re plastic not brass.
Part 1 is piston type.
Part 2 is brass diaphragm type
Part 3 is plastic diaphragm type.

Ours sizzles along for a while before it finally shuts off, that's a Screwfix one as well. It does the job so no worries.

Sounds like yours is working correctly. You can get valves with a small weir chamber so when the water over flows the weir it fills immediately and shuts off. Sorry if the explanation is poor and don't know if they are available in side entry though.

May be there is problem with your toilet fill valve, I will suggest you to change your fill valve and get a new toilet fill valve, replace with the old one. Hope your problem will be solved.

I would hope it’s mended by now, last post was November 2018. Welcome to the forum Vivian.
