When I built my extension a few years ago the toilet had to have extraction as no windows....

Good to know. Also the building inspector at your local council will probably tell you for definate if you email them.

Consider avoiding the anti-planning department for advice on something that common sense and ones nose should provide the answer for, or you may find yourself in for a lot of unnecessary interference and grief. Just saying.

It had to conform to building regulations nothing to do with planning?

It would be better to run a duct from the fan through the void to an outside wall. What's the point of stinking out the whole house every time someone uses the khazi?

its because we have become to much vain of people

its not really needed to do ducting to the outside it can be run through a fan filter but because we dont want to see it we do it that way, fitting it into a false ceiling is even better

plastic ducting also changes your fire rated ceilings what used to be 30 mins to 1 hr rated ceilings is only 5 mins or less and its at the floor boards ( kitchen reference )

If I bought a house and someone had fitted a cloakroom fan that vented under the floor void or into the 1st floor joists I would be well miffed, says instant bodge to me
You also need to think about chemical smells like bleach and cleaning products not just number two's! very dangerous if not vented

Ive seen a few houses were the vent goes into the void or the loft. A bath or shower usually ends up with mould and damp but a toilet is usually fine

Extraction to the outside is a requirement, duct through the floor void if you can, but otherwise you will have to run on a surface and box

correct thats it in a nutshell i end up doing them with a surface box 4 inch by 2 inch square plastic ducting through other rooms to outside up in the corner of a ceiling and wall if its through planing .if its not and yhour not prepaired to do it properly dont bother at all . im doing a fan in a shower room this weekend for someone and coring through the wall because some previous dope just vented in to the attic
