Titanium ..your thoughts please.

I don't know much about Titanium ( or even if I've spelt it correctly )

I understand it is a hard wearing metal but don't know if you can work it and sharpen it so as to make a 6 inch long 1 inch wide pair of nail clippers for cutting braid sea fishing line ( 80 pounds breaking strain )

I have been using some Lindstrom tempered Swedish steel electronic work side cutters but they have suffered from seawater corrosion.

Any thoughts or advice as to my idea ???
How do you cut , bend and sharpen and posibbly temper it to retain the edge ? Is it salt water resistant ??? Can it be sopt welded ? How do you drill it?

I`d just give up fishing, there`s been nothing good to catch round there since the oil.


I dont think Ti is the right material for what you want, i dont think it`s hard enough to sharpen like that. Arent a normal pair of side cutters good enough for the job, or is 80lbs test a typo?

As for the other questions, i`ve always treated it pretty much the same as anything else as regards cutting, bending and drilling. It`s only really becomes a problem when welding, i think you need an answer from Tig Paul or Hotrodder for that.

Seems a bit OTT for a pair of cutters. I don't really think Ti is the best solution All you need is some side cutters made of stainless, 316 preferably as salt water wont touch it. Good bet is knowing someone in the NHS lots of the medical equip for theatre is 316, im sure they must have a use for some form of side cutter to chomp something up in our bodies.

Do a search for stainless side cutters, I did and got a fair few returns from fishing tackle shops plus others.

All Ti alloys are totally immune to salt water AFAIK, some of the alloys are hardenable but not to the levels obtainable from carbon steels and martensitic stainless. It is used for knives but rarely because it's not hard enough to hold an edge very well. Around 1/2 the stiffness of steels too. Titanium coated knives are a little more common

The harder alloys are a bitch to fabricate with, drilling... fine even with a cheapnese drill press, not so much fun with a hand drill! Can be sawn, sheared and ground like other metals but it's not very DIY tool friendly

Something like grade 5 (6Al4V) is quite a bit harder than 316 and can be precipitation hardened to somewhere around 40HRC which is still a lot softer than good quality knives, maybe close to cheap chisels and axes? I know less than nothing about fishing so i've no idea how tough it is to cut an 80lb line. Doubt it's the way forward though

As said i'd look for some stainless side cutters and just take care of 'em, won't be immune to corrosion in that environment but will probably wear out first. Be a LOT cheaper too

I can see that titanium is perhaps not what I'm looking for.

The braid I have is 80 pound stuff and is as hard as nails( from the USA ) I have been using it to make the hook lengths for when fishing for any of the shark family or toothed fish such as wrasse.
A normal set of so called quality nail clippers soon blunt .. the filleting knife I once used to cut some would have made a good train seat from London to Forfar.

I had toyed with the idea of of making a pair of secateurs with a disposable Stanley blade upon a disposable lead anvil.
But I'll have a play on the ebay and see what I can get.

Had a play ..clagged in chiropody and had a bimble ..found some Titanium nail cutters at £14 ish & P&P... Thanks again guys.

What a " SB " I am , I have three soldering irons & make everything up at home prior to going out on a boat or beach session.

That is brilliant ( my brain is not working so well these days )
