Top ten uses for a Titan Bench Drill

These are versatile little machines. Heres the ten best things you can do with them.

10. Somewhere to keep my welding magnets.
9. Somewhere to hang my welding helmet.
8. Mixing cakes. The rotation isnt quite as eccentric as the kenwood in the kitchen, and I think the kenwood had more power.
7. Stiring my tea.
6. Shaking the bench.
5. Making small peices of rubber from drive belts.
4. Garden Ornament.
3. Drawing egg shapes on a piece of paper. Just put a pencil in the chuck
2. A way to create extra scrap for the scrap bin. We all know how handy it is to have some scrap handy.

When I got a pillar drill from Record tools (DP58P - for woodworking) it was similarly disappointing too. On closer inspection I found the MT2 arbour was machined so badly that it wouldn't seat correctly, at either end and ran out of true. Also; the quality of the chuck was so abysmal that I threw them both in the scrap bin. A nice chap at Rohm helped me out, with replacement parts, it's a pleasure to use now! I'm thinking; that Record, as well as others, fit cheap 'consumables' to reduce their costs, so they can compete in the market at all.

Other wise; my suggestion is to make it into a massive musical box movement and submit it to The Tate!

I bought a secondhand Clarke pillar drill off eBay specifically to drill out a couple of rounded socket head bolts in a motorcycle brake caliper. It did it (just about) but the accuracy seemed very hit and miss. I suspect my drill is as poorly built as yours was. How do I check the arbour and chuck for true? And if I need replacements, do Rohm have retail outlets?

The rest of my drill was all right. I could see the arbour (chuck end) wobbling about, while the drill was running, with the chuck off. When I took the arbour off; I ran it along my bench, like a snooker cue ...not good! There were also sporadic contact areas on the arbour made by taking it out, and putting it back in, while the drill was running (usual disclaimer - I don't recommend anyone do this - I love danger). One could tell, by the contact areas, the machining process was poorly executed and the arbour was at fault. This small run-out was severely accentuated by the time it got the drill bit tip.

The chuck was just plain crap (probably made by "Lucky Golden Rat" - no actual name on it). It was a pain to use, the rough milled outer sleeve wouldn't spin freely, chuck key didn't engage properly, wouldn't hold drill bits, too much slop in jaws, etc.

When I examined the new replacement parts; the differences were profound. Rohm probably won't deal directly with public enquiries, but you can either find your local distributor, by phoning Rohm, and asking where to order from, or just ask them for the bits you require, directly.

Filling the main column with wet cement mix also helps!

Thanks - I'll have a good look at mine this weekend.

I'll do the main column mod once I've got the drill in its intended final location. At present it's in the attic bedroom, but it's going in the cellar...

If you put enough cement in it now it will probably find it's own way to the cellar!
