here's some pics of my latest project!

Decided a while back that I wanted to build an 8x5 tandem axle tipper trailer after getting the axles, hitch and wheels from "Feen" on here!

The fabrication has taken me just under 3 days - plenty of brew breaks

those with a good eye will notice a little bit of "welsh" engineering in there

Just got to dismantle it and get it up to the galvanisers next week and then wait!

you might want to put some ears on the chassis rail to locate the body when it drops down on to the stops

the ears are there on the front "bump stops" you just can't see them in the picture very well!

yip decided they would be the easiest option and I quite like the simplicity of them!

it was hard work raising it up when i was checking it for tip angle etc and the trailer was bare with no load, floor or sides fitted!

How would that go when tipping the contents, as in...would it not want to fall backwards? Would a small jockey type wheel help, will the hitch be strong enough(in a lifting motion) to hold it...or would it not be a problem weight transfer and pivot wise?

EDIT: Im assuming it would be left hitched when tipping so it can be moved forward.

Remember that a lot of the weight will be on the tipping ram till most of the load is off loaded. So it should never be in danger of lifting itself of the tow hitch. You should never tip with it off a vehicle unless you have a pair of rear legs that can take the weight.

It will be hitched up when ever it is used for tipping. I don't plan to be using it all the time soley for tipping. Most of its use will be as a flatbed transporting things, but I thought adding the tipping feature would make it far more versatile - saves handballing aggregate or sand out of bags

it will be getting ifor williams style drop down legs at the back to steady it if it needs tipped whilst unhitched.

finally got time to get the trailer up to Highland Galvanisers in Cumbernauld on Friday. So all things going to plan I will collect it towards the end of the week!!

Then its final assembly fitting the floor and lights and the hydraulics!

this would be an ok method for that type of trailer as it will not be carrying much more than 500-600Kg! My trailer will take approx 1500Kg so you would be there just as long if not longer than the hydraulic hand pump!!! plus, I now have the funds to get an electric set up for it

Will keep the hydraulic unit for another wee project I have in the pipeline!

Got the trailer back from the galvanisers this morning total weight of the chassis, tipper bed, sides, tailgate and headboard was 210Kg. Very happy with that weight as I will keep the overall weight of the completed trailer under 500Kg

Hope to get it completed middle of next week - just got the floor to fit and galv sheet to pop rivet to the side frames, tailgate andheadboard, and connect the lights up!

James, this was the weight from the galvanisers without wheels etc fitted. I sent you pics a few weeks ago to your e-mail of it before galvanising.

Will get it built up this week, hoping to be done by wednesday afternoon so will get pics of it then!

tip angle is approx 75-80* i reckon, but not measured it yet!

Got the trailer all built up with axles and hydraulics.

Tip angle is nearer 55* than my earlier estimate of 75*. This will still work fine! Floor and galv sheet to be fitted and its done!

Really pleased with how it has turned out!
