Had some rather odd imperfections in some of my welds over the last few days. Mostly I have been doing thin metal stitching type technique with occasional short beads.
The best way I can describe it is a sort fizzy sensation through the torch then when I break the arc a plume of molten metal breaks out through the surface of the last weld which flows up like lava for a second to become a fairly brittle horn shaped column once cooled. Grinding often reveals bubbles under the surface of these horns and occasional cavities, leading to me needing to redo small areas.
Too much heat coupled with impurities left from the primer was my best guess or possibly the effect of welding through rust converted areas?
My camera is full so I didn't get any pics as yet. Realise this post is not very helpful having read back through but just on the off chance someone knows what I am talking about! Feel free to blame inhaling too many fumes making me hallucinate as that may well be the case. If I can grind it off it can't be a figment of my imagination! Perhaps I need to break off from the garage for a day or two!
