Timing belt different to OE ?

I've bought a Gates timing belt kit for my 55 reg Fiat Doblo MPV 1.9JTD.
Comparing the belt with the OE item the teeth as slightly different in that the OE have teeth with sharp corner whereas the Gates have sort of rounded teeth.
When tried on the cam pulley the Gates belt it isn't as "tight" and there is a small (say 0.5mm) amount of movement.
People on Fiat Doblo Facebook group say it'll be OK but what are peoples here opinion ?

BTW kit was bought from Autodoc, in Germany, months ago so returning to supplier isn't an option

If it's moving side to side as in there's movement between the teeth I'd say that it's wrong and not worth the risk of it jumping.
Is it the right length? It's also possible the old one was the wrong belt.
I've never had one that's loose on the pulley though.
Edit: Autodoc a quite famous for sending the wrong parts...

I think you may be looking at 4 new valves and sundry gaskets if it's a cloned part. Have you checked the part number on the Gates site, synchronous drive system section.

All the belts I've seen with rounded teeth fit neatly into the rounded recesses on the pulleys. Not worth the risk as others have said.

Definitely a genuine Gates kit and correct per the application list / kit number. Gates only list the one kit. Vehicle has only done 70,000 miles and this is first cam belt change so old one is OE Fiat item. Matching length / number of teeth. The belt is also loose on the kit supplied tensioner pulley !

Go get a genuine belt if that worried.
Peace of mind is worth the money.

Is that the same twin cam GM engine Alfa Romeo and Vauxhall used?
If it is I would definitely change the water pump and tensioner as well as on those engines it's often the pump that seizes up taking out the timing belt!

AFAIK same bottom end but single cam version. Kits include new waterpump and tensioner.

with you on that , and try getting them to replace wrong item is a nightmare
