Timing belt - close to destruction?!

Planning to do a service on our Volvo XC90 D5 (2005) in a couple of weeks time, so buying the parts in advance.
Oil change, oil, pollen and fuel filter change, aux belt and pulleys and thought I'd check the timing belt condition...

Belt was supposedly changed at 100,000 miles according to bloke I bought the car off and the service book (recommended 108,000) so should be good condition - car now on 147,000 miles.
I bought the car on 110,000 and was thinking the belt should be fine until 200,000 miles

I'm glad I checked but was shocked to see how bad it is (I don't think it was changed when the service book says!)

Wife using the car today to and from work (everything crossed) but am going to change it this weekend now! (along with water pump and pulleys)

That belt looks about right for 147k miles, I'd say you're right about it not being done. I regularly go inspect cars for buyers and see fake history for jobs that hadn't been done all the time.

I've owned my truck since new,
At 50k I had to do the timing belt as it had stretched enough to throw a position error.
Was overdue on the time interval for the belt though.

Exactly what I was thinking by the looks of the belt, but didn't want to think about it too much!

As long as its fine for today, I'll be happy - changing it myself at the weekend.

I had my 300tdi done at a 'specialist'
Changed nothing but the belt even though I paid for it all to be done.
Went after about 15/20kish miles,forget exactly.
Changed everything myself now and I've never heard it run so smooth so I don't think it was ever set right either.

Absolutely. If it’s a keeper I always always do the belt within a couple of weeks of getting it home.

Some have been genuine but a few that claim to have been changed blatantly were not

My needs doing too, there's alignment points visible, looks fairly straight forward.

Manufacturer service intervals are notoriously 'extended' e.g. BMW recommend oil changes at 18k miles, not on my one they're not.

2 years or 24000 miles on the Combo van! Mind you it's taken over a litre of oil at 16000! So it will have had half a change by the time it's serviced...

only do around 10,000 klms per year max.....
always buy a full kit inc w/pump and it's done every 2 years ....
always the first sunny day after new year....
only ever buy a qual kit, cant remember the name...

Winchboys van bought from a garage, told him it had been changed, few thousand miles well 10K and we decided to swap it, the belt looked quite new but you never can tell, the water pump well it was a wonder it still worked it was well and truly knackered, so best to change the lot and start afresh

I was supposed to get my Mondeo timing belt and pump etc changed on Wednesday but the garage asked me if I can postpone it a while as they're snowed under with work. So we agreed I'd get it done next month when the car goes in for MOT. I hope I've not pushed my luck too far.... it's got 120,000 miles on and the belt is due at 125.

Lancia suggested something like 30,000 mile change interval for the 16v engine, same as the 8v . . . problem was, unlike the 8v, the belt on the 16v snapped at 25,000 with very good repeatability . . . the service interval was revised

I've done a few over the last 25 years . . . None have looked remotely close to failing, but better safe than sorry!

I remember when people would avoid cars with timing belts because they could snap, the comedy thing now it's timing chains that cause most tof the misery, stretching,snapping, broken guides,

I had a T4 from new.Had belt/pump etc changed at 80k due to misinformation so should have been good until 30k . At 118 k while sat at lights I noticed a strange faint ticking .After a few seconds realised it was the belt , so instead of turning it off and causing chaos I very gently trickled on min revs around the corner out of the way ,about 50 yards. They don't half go with a bang . Totaled the top end .
