Time to show my progress no1 drill.

Well ive had this drill about a month now and learnt a lot about from this forum and a couple of others
but mainly this one.
My drill was in a bit of a state when I got it, rusty pulley cover, all the paintwork in a sorry state,
the piller I thought was a bit rusty but turned out to be just old oil and grime from years of sitting about.

The electric motor was playing up a bit again due to just dirt inside from 40 plus years.
Anyway I decided to make it look a bit better, and its almost finished now.

Here is what it was like and what its like at the moment, still a little bit to finish it off though.

So after all this cleaning up and old paint removal it was time for the new paint to get splashed on

Thats looking great so far, you just need some Belzona molecular metal to fill in the smile on the table, it's not as bad as some I have seen though.

With a nice tin of johnstone's metal paint I set to work taking stuff indoors and making everywhere stink of paint.
But results were pretty good and 2 coats seem to have made a nice job for now, I will give it another coat in a couple of weeks time if it needs it.

and now ive started to put some of it back together and painted underneath the table and the sides a first coat.
still have the base to give a complete coat but that's easy as I can take that off when I want with my hoist (block and tackle ) in the garage.

I am pretty happy with the results as its now nice and clean and looks a little bit better than when I got it, well I think so ha ha .

so I think its coming a long ok, and definitely cleaner than it was.
I just have a few bits to finish off , like switch box cover , motor and bracket , and the base.

Now it looks like I have a nice drill to play with in the garage, even the wife said it looks nice now, last week she still thought it was just a rust heap
and complete waste of money ha ha .

The table is not that bad to be honest, the marks are very very shallow, I might just leave it as it is. although Belzona is supposed to
be very good from what ive heard.
I know its used on hydraulic rams that are pitted causing seals to bust, so might look into getting a bit of that stuff.

Funny how things like that are beautiful, but not in a MattF pervy vice way.

ahh , well if its more than 7s 6d a tube they can keep it .
these little marks are so shallow they are not worth realy talking about, I reckon if I took it to machine shop to have it skimmed like a
engine cylinder head they would disappear. plus I will probably make a wooden sacrificial table to go on it for most stuff.
and when I see a nice vice for it that needs a paint ill buy one and stick that on there to hide the marks

I got the drill at a bargain price, so not going to spend a fortune on a vice for it, been thinking about sticking my record 4 inch vice on it if I need it.

shell out and try and get a nippy drill vice. u will loose a lot of height using a bench vice

I will keep an eye open for a prop little drill vice.
Been a couple on fleabay I liked but they were so expensive it was madness.
I used to have a little vice that would of gone on here lovely, no idea where that went though.

This Drill would of stayed looking crap if people on here had not helped me solve a couple of problems with it.
the motor was playing up a bit and I got advice about taking it apart and cleaning it up, also got a manual from a nice chap here too.
This is my first Bench drill, after years of keep saying a I need one I was going to buy a brand new drill. (big mistake)
Then I saw how crappy they are unless your a millionaire.
I looked at the machine fart ones and when looking at them in the flesh they are rubbish and I would kill one of those in a single day.
So I looked at the axminster stuff, did not realise that is also imported inferior weak stuff until a I saw one being used.
I wanted something I could chuck an engine on and work on it if need be, or a outboard boat gearbox , plus drill my props. (venting)
That left me a choice of either save up for 20 more years or buy a proper old English tool and use it and abuse it.
Now I have one and tried it out a few times I realise that I will probably be well dead before this machine.
if this is a 1960 model then its the same age as me, but the drill is in far better condition than me that's for sure.

After using it and seeing how good it works I thought it well deserves a nice drop of paint to freshen it up a bit.
The colour is a bit light I know, but in my dull and dingy garage it will stand out nice and make me keep it clean.

I don't expect my paint to last any more than about 3 years if im lucky, but I enjoyed taking the drill apart and learning a bit about it along the way.
This morning though when I looked at the box of bits I had that should all go back on the drill I almost sharted, it was only when getting close to the
bottom of the pile that it looked like I was winning.
The amazing thing is, I DONT have any spares left over !!! that is a first for me ha ha

One thing I will be doing is adding a light in the space under the body, the semi hole (not drilled all the way through ) I have opened up to accept wire
so its just a case of finding a unit small enough that is also very bright.

I filled the holes in my table with Milliput.

We have put led strip light on our guillotine & Geka, made the world a better place, 12 volts almost unbreakable & cheap

I was thinking about led strip light, but I would prefer to keep it up in the hollow part underneath the main housing to sort of keep it looking original.
I thought I had the perfect lamp but it sticks down an inch too far.

but definitely needs a light for sure

Milliput, I have not heard that for years.
it was your drill colour that set me on the lighter colour idea, it looks good and makes it a bit like original, sort of very pale green/blue.

Someone on here posted a photo of a Progress drill that he'd fitted a small halogen lamp to. Not all models had a space for a light though.

oh, were some filled in solid then ? I thought all the progress No 1 were similar , but I have seen a very old one in dark green that was very different.
halogen is a good idea, keep me warm as well as lighting up the workpiece ? plus of course warming up a pie
