I did this on the weekend. had to make some half hexagons, well nearly anyway. 2 off 15" lengths and 1 off 21" length. 15" either side of the 21" with mitres cut etc. took me 3 attempts before finally getting it right. the first time I welded the 2 15" bits together, then I welded the 15" and 21" together, but got the angle the wrong way round and ended up with a straight bit of box again, then I managed to weld the 21" bit to a bit of 11" scrap...

I sometimes (often) get mixed up when I'm doing mitres with wooden beading. It's supposed to come out like a rectangular frame, but it often ends up looking like a staircase. Sometimes in 3D!

I used to hat mitres, well I still do, but if I have a job that requires a lot to be cut I mark them all with corresponding numbers and and arrow pointing on each one pointing in the same direction. that way you lay them all face up, join the numbers, make sure the arrows are pointing the same and then tack it all up.

All you have to do is weld the two long pieces together,then cut the correct length off one piece and weld it onto one of the short pieces, Job done!!! As already mentioned we have ALL been there.

A few weeks back I was doing a double (french door type) set of stable doors. The verticals were all very close but not quite the same as the horizontals kept on tacking the two 90s together nice and square then failing to get those 90s sunsequently set up square measured across the corners! Should have used your trick or similar but I used the curse and big hammer method instead

Its great when the process takes over from the design.
eg just what bigegg did. Join the bits together correctly but completely wrong.
I am always reversing things or making them back to front,left handed instead of right handed etc.
Tack tack tack and tack again.
Tacks can be broken, proper welds need ages to remove and redo.
I also find once I have cocked something up once I tend to follow the same process several times.
Oh it's great to be crap.

I did one today. Was given a sort of drinks tray to repair. Made from four steel rings with 2mm plate underneath, welded together at the base, a central piece of 12mm square up the middle, with a twist and a hole with a ring for a handle, then four rings higher up the shaft. One of the bottom rings had broken off. No surprise, the welds had zero penetration. Quick blast put it back in place, then gave it a good yank to be sure, at which point the column and three other bits fell off, for the same reason. Oh b*****! At least my welds were solid. Grind off the remains of the others and weld it back together. Except I welded it the wrong way round. Its now perfectly solid, but three of the cup holders point the wrong way and its now really solid. Curse, grind, curse grind, pull it all apart, grind, think (important, that bit) arrange it all again properly, clamp it to the table so I can't get it wrong again, blast with mig, quick tidy with flapdisk and five minute job has only taken half an hour. Result!
