Hi

I was wondering what kind of adhesive would I use for this . I have built a wooden frame round my raeburn and I am wanting to lay slate round it . What would be the best to use.

Any flexible tile adhesive suitable for natural stone. I like instarmac and mapei.
Use sbr (modified pva) to seal the ply.

Really nice to use. There grouts good too. Has a very good pot life

I have tried heat resistant adhesive just there and it failed. that's how I was looking for some more advice.

Did you read the data sheet re curing times before adding high heat. 7 days before heating with UFH then bougt up to temps slowly over time to avoid cracking is standard.

Give mapei a call for advice on best product.

Make sure your timber work is well braced. Timber moves especially when heating and cooling. Build it strong and use 18mm ply to tile on.

Never had an issue tiling hearths, around cookers and behind rads with decent flexi adhisive

the Mapei or any decent tile adhesive wont fail, the woodwork will. We've kinda moved on from wood as a support

Since when?

Bloody hope not or I'm out of a job.

Nothing wrong,with ply for tiling on.

And tile adhesive will fail if installed incorrectly.

hardi, wedi, shluter systems etc Ply moves ply stains grout youll find that most of the addy manufacturers wont guarantee their products on anything other than 18mm+ with very specific fixing criteria - it was priming the face , then priming the edges now its priming the back but not face
Ive never had any problems with a floor overlayed with any of the above , ive had cracks at 4'x8' centres ive had that redwood face peel off in sheets once its got slightly damp from primer and the tannin leach out staining grout

wood as a support obviously but not for sticking tile directly to - your jobs still safe

Won't dispute there decent substrates but done properly ply is still viable.

Floors these days I tend to fit 6mm ply screwed every 100mm over floorboards to reduce movement between the boards and use fracture matting over the top.
