I decided to do a mini service on my 59 model 2.0TDCi VW Tiguan. basically a oil and filter change and a visual on the brake pads and discs. Only got 38,500 odd on the clock so I did not expect problems. Getting the vertical upturned filter casing off is a pain as it is plastic and has a 32mm hex head to spanne,r only access is so limited it is a pain. The drain plug is easy. Anyway job done and started engine up to check for leaks. All ok and so, just before switching of,f I decided to blip the throttle to rev the motor a bit. Now in all the time I have had the car(5 years) I have never revved the car whilst stationary. Anyway lo and behold the engine would only rev to 2500rpm! No warning messages were lit or pending although I did get a advisory to release my brake which actually was not on. Doom and gloom as the last time the engine went into limp mode(which it seemed had happened this time) was just before the guarantee ran out and some valve or other had failed. It was drivable, but on the way to the "stealers" another two related messages were generated. Anyway, the next day, I drove the car and all was normal. I reckon as I was not actually in gear the Brain/s are programmed to prevent high revving thus protecting the engine. If that is so how do they do the emissions test on the MOT? Years ago the garages use to have signs warning owners that diesel engine cars are revved to max and are to ensure their engines are capable to take the pain as if anything goes bang it is not the garages fault. Has all that changed then?
