Evening all.

Have spent the last two hours seriously testing Malcolm's search function on the forum for anything vaguely to do with Tig.
Have won a couple of jobs that require the use of Tig (Welding thin Mild steel and Stainless Steel). Stick is my bread and butter work, and Mig as of late, however I need to enter the world of Tig. (And am quite looking forward to 'avin a go)

So.... was planning to purchase: http://www.mylincolnelectric.com/Catalog/equipmentdatasheet.asp?p=7241
or similar, along with a bottle of BOC's finest Pureshield Argon. Was then planning to use A15 Supersteel as a filler and 2% thoriated tungstens (Red tip) or Ceriated (Grey tip). This welder is a DC, so i realise i aint gonna be welding ally with it. (What tips needed for Stainless?)
If I have committed a Tig faux pas can you let me know!
I know you folks have offered a lot of assistance with Tig, and am sorry if I am raising things previosuly discussed, but would welcome owt yer can offer!

It's a good presentation, tells you all the basics, including about tungstens - it's off a college course.

I reckon the Lincoln machines are pretty good, and the lift arc thing looks the biz. But what do I know! Here - i've been practicing me vertical down mma root welding. Got it sorted! All in the prep, and keep the keyhole running nice. Some very frustrating hours of toil though!

Haha - i'm going for the high tech stuff - murex 6013s. I know if i was pretending to be a real stover i'd be on 6010's or at least basics, but i've only got me little buzzbox to play with, so i'm doing it my way.

btw Paul, did you try any of our brilliant Edinburgh ales while you were here? I'm sittin in the hoose the noo with a bottle of McEwans Champion (7.3%). Not sure where they make it any more as they've just knocked down the brewery... but it's good stuff! Beats bitter every time! (don't tell me you're a lager drinker pal, or i'll have to blacklist you)

tchooo. 6013's?!!! - If it works fer you mate, then that's spot on.
When i was taught to weld vertical up/down, i spent the best part of a week with lengths of angle 2 metres long back to back tacked to the bench, spending 8 hours a day practising. Prior to that i would always try to turn the work so i could weld downhand, until i got let loose on big stuff where turning it wasnt an option!
Erm, yup, lager everytime i'm afraid. I wondered why in Edinburgh there was hoards of people stood outside the pubs, and inside almost empty - then realised you have a smoking ban - every poor scotsman stood outside in the freezing cold avin a tab!

I don't smoke (anymore) it's great going down the pub. Everywhere to sit... but no one to talk to!

Only advice I can give is:
Make sure you buy a good make with available spares
Make sure its an HF start tig

and if buying secondhand, try to get a test run before buying. Just like with MIG, you will need a decent regulator, and supply of gas (Pure Argon).

Tig and gas welding are quite similar, both require lots of time and practie to learn. Oh, and you will need a little bench grinder or similar for all the Tungstons that get fouled and need re-pointing as you learn good luck, you wont regret learning TIG, its a very usefull tool for many different applications.

Funny you should mention that Si, I have just picked up a nice Lincoln Invertec V140-S MMA/Tig jobbie.
Quick trip to the dreaded BOC tomoro to get meself some Pureshield and i promise to post some pictures for you all to laugh at.
Me...? welding 1.0mm mild steel. Turn up for the books i can tell you! I'll have to hide the MMA leads off it - old habits die hard.
