tightening wheel nuts.

I snapped the stud on the lexus by overtightening the wheel nut.


Easy enough to fix -
remove wheel.
Remove caliper
Remove disk (held on by wheel nuts)
Tap out the stud (there's a gap in the back plate to make it easy)

Put new stud in, put wheel nut on, and tighten to pull stud into splined hole.

Replace everything, tighten wheel nuts and snap same stud!


£5.14 for a new stud! (Still cheaper than a bolt from been n queued).

I asked at the service desk what torque should be on a wheel nut:
110Nm
That's 22kg on the end of my 18" breaker bar.

81 foot pounds is normal for steel wheels, time to get the torque wrench out

I broke a decent 18" breaker bar trying to undo the nuts that were on a discovery 1 I bought. In the end I used a pole on the end of a 3/4" bar to get the job done

I’ve finally dug out my torque wrench and used it in my wheel nuts the other day. 120Nm is less than I thought it was.

The second time only took me 12 minutes from parking up to packed up.

Helps all the tools were already out.

I always slacken then tighten with a torque wrench when my car comes back from service or tyre change. After I watched a tyre place hold the windy gun on for a good 10 seconds I've never trusted them.

I do this too
Stripped my locking nut undoing on one occasion.
Next time in there asked the guy to go easy on my locking nuts as last time they did obe it stripped undoing. He looked at me like I was **** so didn't go back for a decade

Snapped a brake caliper bolt on a Sunday afternoon which was an obscure pitch of thread. Had to wait until the following day to get a replacement from the stealers! Lesson learned don't under estimate a Milwaukee Impact on the low torque setting

The lesson is all bolts/nuts should be hand tightened and then use the torque wrench. On wheels I follow that procedure and ensure that they are tightened diagonally with both hand and wrench then again with the wrench to ensure they are correct. I use the breakback wrenches as I find them easier to use as dial ones need to be watched where as the breakback tells you the figure set is reached.

I used to torque to about 50% on first pass, still do for most things, but for wheels a light flick of the impact gun then torque star pattern.

I used to smile when working with an "old school" fitter, he would tighten until the wrench clicked then a bit more "for good luck"

If a torque wrench is used properly then whats the issue.

If it goes out of calibration when used then buy a better wrench.

I have a Britool 1/2" drive torque wrench, you can push the square drive through to either side (or take it out altogether and fit an extension) so it can be used on left hand threads.

I have seen tyre places use a torque wrench set to the correct figure . . .after banging the bolts in with a windy gun . . . click . . sorted ;-)
